Veterinary Assistant

We are looking for a vet assistant to help us build our growing practice. Key aspects of the role include tending to the client experience, supporting with animal care and treatment, and contributing to hospital operations.

Description

Responsibilities Include

Client Experience:

• Build relationships and make clients and patients feel welcomed in our hospital
• Triage/recognize severe cases in need of immediate attention
• Answer phones, greet clients, and perform other types of client communications such as taking and responding to messages, sending cards and appointment reminders, preparing information packets, receiving payment, and scheduling appointments
• Organize and maintain accurate client and patient records, consent forms, and charts for technicians and doctors

Animal Care and Treatment:

• Support with routine procedures such as restraint, blood draws, assessing vitals, setting up for IV and urinary catheters, vaccine preparations, toenail trims, ear cleanings; subcutaneous, intravenous, and intramuscular injections
• Support a variety of diagnostic services including setting up and taking x-rays, blood work, urinalysis, cytology, culture, and histopath preparation; in-house lab tests and outside lab preparation
• Assist doctors and technicians
• Troubleshoot, maintain, and sterilize medical equipment as needed such as anesthesia machine, autoclave, dental machine, etc
• Utilize Fear Free and Low-Stress Handling techniques for the comfort and safety of our patients, clients and staff

Hospital Operations:

• Maintain a clean and clutter free work area and assist with maintaining clean facilities – vacuuming, mopping, dusting, changing garbage, laundry, kennel/litter maintenance, etc.
• Stock exam rooms and supplies as needed and support the hospital inventory process
• Follow daily, weekly, and monthly tasks lists
• File and organize all relevant electronic and paper documents

Qualifications:

• Service and relationship oriented, dedicated to friendly and professional interactions
• Strong communication skills and the ability to explain minor medical issues
• Ability to recognize clients and pets and troubleshoot client challenges as they come up
• Highly organized and detail-oriented
• Knowledge of computer and technology use and ability to learn key hospital technology systems
• Multi-tasking and the ability to handle stressful situations
• Adapt to the styles of other technicians and doctors
• Ability to lift objects or pets of at least 30lbs and control large, anxious, and/or fearful pets
• Willingness to learn and grow and support the growth and development of other staff members
• Ability to follow directions with and without supervision
• Prior experience as a veterinary assistant and/or with customer service preferred
• Ability to communicate in more than one language preferred
