DEPARTMENT OF PALLIATIVE, REHABILITATION AND INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE POSITION DESCRIPTION

RANK:        Assistant Professor, Clinical Faculty Appointment

DIVISION/DEPARTMENT/Section:

Cancer Medicine/Palliative, Rehabilitation and Integrative Medicine/Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS:

This is a faculty position responsible to the Chairman, Department of Palliative, Rehabilitation and Integrative Medicine, Division of Cancer Medicine.

GENERAL DUTIES:

Provides clinical and research expertise in patient care in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Medicine, and an appropriate teaching environment for fellows, residents, observers, visitors, and students of cancer medicine.

CHARACTERISTICS DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

I.              Clinical – 80%

1.     Practice clinical medicine in an exemplary manner in standards set forth by the Texas State Board of Examiners Develop and maintain a service for patients referred to the UT MD Anderson.

2.     Provide clinical staffing for the Department at a commensurate level with that which would be provided by other clinicians with the same level of training and experience.

3.     Visually review for proper ICD-10 and CPT coding and approve all charge documents within one working day.

4.     Complete patient documentation for medical records within timeframes provided by institutional policy. Will require charting in a clear and concise manner, and visual review of documents.

5.     Correspond as appropriate in writing or in telephone conversations with referring physicians and other health care personnel regarding patient care and treatment.

6.     Request appropriate consultations for patients by phone conversations or in writing to other physicians and other health care personnel as appropriate.

7.     Provide a role model as a practitioner for faculty, fellows, residents, and students rotating in the Department.

8.     Provide a balanced and integrated educational program for fellows and for observers, visitors, medical residents, and students who rotate through the various Sections in the Department.

a.     After comprehensive review and analysis, develop, implement, provide, and evaluate the written learning materials for the specific graduate curriculum in cancer medicine.

9.     Develop and implement specific continuing education programs pertaining to cancer rehabilitation medicine. Analyze education needs and, using a dictating machine or a computer keyboard, develop continuing education programs.

10.  Attend and participate in Division/Department teaching and continuing education conferences, which require verbal/interaction with colleagues and walking to meeting locations throughout the campus.

11.  Provide peer review for assessing the clinical practice of faculty within the Department.

II.             Administration – 5%

Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested by attending appropriate meetings, which may include walking to each meeting site. Listen to deliberations and provide verbal feedback as necessary. Visually review all documents pertaining to committee functions.

III.           Research – 10%

Actively engage in clinical research and scholarly activity to enhance the academic environment of the Department.
 

1.     Develop programs of clinical research and scholarly activities in keeping within the goals of the Department. Requires the ability to synthesize a myriad of information pertaining to the area of research. May necessitate (orally or in writing) instructing research support personnel in protocol implementation.

2.     Seek appropriate funding mechanisms to support clinical or basic research. May require completion of grant application forms through oral dictation or use of a computer and keyboard. This will also require budget development and analysis.

IV.           Education- 5%

1.     Represent the Department in local, regional, state, and national matters pertaining to cancer rehabilitation medicine. Will require traveling to sites outside of the Houston area and, upon return, disseminating the information obtained or learned by sharing with the department colleagues verbally or in writing.

2.     Serve on institutional and hospital committees as requested by attending appropriate meetings, which may include walking to each meeting site. Listen to deliberations and provide verbal feedback as necessary. Visually review all documents pertaining to committee functions.

3.     Keep abreast of current approaches in the management of patients through attendance at continuing education conferences in the specialty. This will require listening to and assimilating information from the conferences.

Complies with all policies and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Required:

1.     Doctorate-level degree in a field appropriate to faculty role and department mission

2.     Licensed to Practice in Texas

3.     Board Certified (or obtained within departmental timeline), unless exempted

Preferred:

1.     Physician who has completed post-graduate residency training and is board certified/eligible in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation.

2.     Must be Board Certified or Board Eligible in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation Medicine

EDUCATION AND LICENSURE:

Required: Degree and residency requirements as defined by the Texas Medical Board. Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)

EXPERIENCE

  • Doctorate level degree

  • Has completed residency in physical medicine & rehabilitation medicine

  • GME trainee (except specialties with shorter residencies or fellowships)
