Mission and objectives
As the first dedicated entity for youth affairs within the United Nations Secretariat, the UN Youth Office champions the rights, perspectives, contributions and potential of young people everywhere. We lead efforts to enhance collaboration, coordination and accountability on youth affairs, ensuring that the United Nations works effectively and inclusively with young people in all their diversity. By fostering meaningful, inclusive, and impactful participation of youth in decision-making processes, our work focuses on empowering young people as agents of transformative change in addressing global challenges in the areas of sustainable development, peace and security, human rights and humanitarian action.
Context
Anchored in the UN Youth Compass, a flagship initiative of the United Nations Youth Office, the UN Youth Townhall will be convened from 8 to 10 December in Heidelberg, Germany, bringing young people and decision-makers together to exchange perspectives, identify shared priorities and co-create solutions for the future.
Discussions during the Townhall will focus on strengthening meaningful youth participation across the three UN pillars: sustainable development, peace and security, and human rights. Within these pillars, sessions will explore cross-cutting issues such as education and future-ready skills, AI and technology, mental health and well-being, and economic opportunities.
To ensure broad geographic representation and the inclusion of young people and communities that are often underrepresented in international policy and decision-making spaces, the UN Youth Office will provide limited funding opportunities to young people (18-35 years old) to participate in-person. This support is intended to help address barriers to participation and ensure that the perspectives, experiences, and priorities of young people whose voices are less frequently heard can meaningfully inform the dialogue and outcomes of the Townhall.
