The Role
We are seeking an experienced and highly capable Senior Data Specialist to lead and coordinate the development, management and continuous improvement of data processes across the organisation.
This is a senior technical role requiring expertise in data engineering, data modelling, database development and the design and management of data processes. The successful candidate will ideally have experience working within scientific, environmental or other complex data-driven environments.
What you will do
- Develop and maintain an understanding of data assets, systems, sources, dependencies and data flows across the organisation.
- Gather business and technical requirements and translate them into effective data solutions and workflows.
- Design, implement and document data ingestion, transformation, validation and integration processes.
- Define and monitor data quality standards, controls and metrics to ensure accuracy, integrity and compliance.
- Support data governance activities, including data standards, metadata, documentation and management processes.
- Coordinate and support data processes across the full data lifecycle.
- Ensure appropriate data security, access controls, retention, backup and recovery procedures are followed.
- Provide technical expertise for data analysis, reporting and visualisation, while supporting project delivery and continuous improvement initiatives.
What you'll bring:
- Experience working with data tools and technologies, including enterprise databases such as Microsoft SQL Server or other relational database platforms.
- Strong understanding of data modelling, database design, data structures and data access methods.
- Experience developing and maintaining data processes, pipelines and technical solutions.
- Demonstrable knowledge of the end-to-end data lifecycle, including ingestion, transformation, validation and management.
- Ability to translate stakeholder and user requirements into clear, effective and technically achievable data solutions.
- Experience applying data quality, governance, security and documentation best practices.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively across teams.
Desirable experience
- Experience working with scientific, environmental, geographical, research or other specialist datasets
- Experience using data analysis, reporting or visualisation tools such as Power BI, SSRS, Jupyter Notebooks, Python or R.
