Sr. Manager, Compliance Monitoring & Automation
JOB TITLE: Sr. Manager, Compliance Monitoring & Automation
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA (Hybrid in our Westwood Office, 3 days/ week)
REPORTS TO: Head of Data
The Company
Sunbit builds financial technology for real life. Our AI-native platform helps more people get to “yes” at the moments that matter with personalized offers, transparent terms, and no added consumer fees. In stores, practices and service centers across the country, Sunbit provides a fast, fair pay-over-time option. For everything else, the Sunbit Credit Card delivers a modern, no-fee credit experience managed in a powerful mobile app.
We are guided by people-centered values: Serve Others Before Self, Include Always, Connect Genuinely, Innovate for Good. These values shape how we build, how we support customers and merchants, and how we work with each other.
What makes Sunbit different is an AI-native infrastructure that runs through the full customer and merchant journey. Our interconnected AI systems power instant decisioning, streamline fraud checks with human-in-the-loop safeguards, and enable highly personalized offers at scale. The result is a quick, fair, and simple experience for consumers and merchants.
We pair this technology with inclusion and transparency. Sunbit delivers industry-leading approval rates — 90%+ in auto service and 85%+ in dental — while maintaining zero consumer fee-based revenue. It is a better way to serve people and merchants, proven at scale.
Today, Sunbit is available across a nationwide, in-person merchant network of 30,000+ locations spanning auto service centers, dental and optical practices, veterinary clinics, and other specialty services. We help teams say “yes” more often and help customers move forward with confidence.
The Role:
This is a build role, and the function is yours to own. You'll own Sunbit's compliance monitoring and controls function end to end: its strategy, its platform, its methodology, its team, and its results. The function exists to answer one question: are our critical lending processes, credit policies, merchant controls, and product workflows executing correctly, for every borrower, across every merchant, every day?
Your job is to answer that question with automated monitoring across the full transaction population, not with samples. You'll design the monitoring platform, define the rule logic and standards, partner with Product and Engineering to build it, and decide how Sunbit detects and fixes compliance issues before they become customer harm or regulatory findings.
This is not a review-operations role. You won't be inheriting a team that works through sample queues. You'll be building the system that makes sample-based review the exception rather than the rule.
Why This Role Is Different:
- You own the function. You'll set the roadmap, the monitoring methodology, and the KPIs. Senior leadership will look to you as the authority on whether Sunbit's controls are working.
- It sits in Data, not Operations. You'll report to the VP of Data, with direct access to the data, engineering partners, and tooling you need to build monitoring at scale. You'll partner closely with Compliance, Legal, Credit Policy (Decisioning), Product, Engineering, and Operations, but this function is built on data and automation from day one.
- Real scale and a growing product set. You'll cover instant point-of-sale financing across thousands of merchant locations, plus the Sunbit Credit Card and CoBrand card products, and the monitoring you build will scale with them.
What you’ll do:
- Build and own the monitoring platform. Design and own the automated checks, rule logic, alert thresholds, and operational dashboards that give first- and third-line partners continuous visibility into control effectiveness and emerging risk.
- Replace sampling with full-population monitoring. Implement automated monitoring across credit underwriting policy execution, merchant agreement compliance, and critical business process controls, covering the full transaction volume wherever feasible.
- Turn regulation into testable rules. Translate requirements under TILA/Reg Z, Regulation B/ECOA, UDAAP, FCRA, and applicable state laws into automated tests on credit decisions, pricing, adverse action, origination outputs, servicing, collections, and customer communications, and flag deviations for immediate review.
- Monitor merchant controls. Build controls that detect violations of merchant-facing terms, behavioral anomalies, and process deviations across Sunbit's partner network that could create consumer harm, reputational, or regulatory risk.
- Detect and classify. Distinguish isolated defects from systemic failures across the loan and card lifecycle, identify patterns and root causes, quantify consumer and regulatory exposure, and drive escalation and prioritization accordingly.
- Drive remediation. Own remediation of findings from detection through verified close-out, partnering across Sunbit to deliver durable fixes with a full audit trail.
- Measure and report. Define and track KPIs and KRIs for the function, including monitoring coverage, detection rates, escape rates, remediation cycle times, and control effectiveness. Report results to senior leadership, the Risk Committee, and regulatory examiners.
- Build with Product and Engineering. Partner directly with Product and Engineering to scope, prioritize, and develop monitoring capabilities, writing clear requirements and rule logic and owning the result through launch and ongoing operation.
- Keep Sunbit exam-ready. Own the data and evidence provided for state regulatory examinations, internal audits, and capital markets audits. Maintain exam-ready documentation and run a pre-submission validation process so every response is accurate, complete, and traceable.
- Lead through influence. Drive outcomes in a matrixed environment through partnership and credibility rather than direct authority.
What You'll Bring:
- Experience in compliance monitoring and testing, controls automation, or compliance/risk analytics within consumer lending or fintech.
- Has led the design and launch of automated compliance monitoring that tests full transaction populations, not samples, in production.
- Leadership experience, ideally leading analysts or technical staff who built monitoring, testing, or controls tooling.
- Hands-on SQL; able to write and review the logic behind automated compliance tests.
- Track record of partnering with Product and Engineering to scope, build, and launch monitoring or controls capabilities.
- Understands how credit decisioning, merchant and partner flows, and product changes ship at a fintech, and can turn regulatory requirements into testable rules in those systems.
- Working knowledge of consumer lending regulations applicable to digital or point-of-sale lending, including TILA/Reg Z, Regulation B/ECOA, UDAAP, and FCRA.
- Demonstrated ability to identify systemic risk patterns in large datasets and turn findings into remediation with measurable impact.
- Experience supporting state regulatory examinations and capital markets audits, including interpreting scope and assembling data and evidence.
- Strong cross-functional influencing skills in a matrixed organization.
- Python for data analysis and automated monitoring (strongly preferred).
- Built a data-driven risk monitoring or control platform from the ground up, including automated rule logic, alert thresholds, defect taxonomies, and remediation tracking workflows.
- Familiarity with credit decisioning systems, including adverse action accuracy monitoring, fair lending analytics, and credit bureau reporting compliance under FCRA and CDIA standards.
- Experience with POS lending, BNPL, point-of-care financing, merchant-based consumer lending, or credit card products, and the compliance dynamics of those distribution models.
- Experience supporting OCC, CFPB, FTC, or state regulatory examinations in a consumer lending or fintech environment.
- Experience building a formal audit response validation process, including pre-submission accuracy checks, sign-off workflows, and documentation standards.
How We Pay:
- We believe in paying fairly and equitably based on a number of factors including but not limited to previous experience, relevant work history, interview performance, geographical location, internal equity, and expected level of ownership.
- We are targeting a salary of $155,000 - $190,000 per year for this role
- This role will also be granted company equity via stock options
