The Institute for Advanced Computational Science (IACS) at Stony Brook University (SBU) is seeking an early-career Research Scientist to join a new Tier-1 supercomputing center funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF).
The IACS is an interdisciplinary research center at Stony Brook University focused on applying computational methods to address a variety of scientific questions. IACS provides computational infrastructure and technical expertise to researchers across the university and beyond.
AMA27/Kitsune, a new NSF-funded Tier-1 supercomputing center, will support large-scale research in artificial intelligence and machine learning, data science, computational physics, climate science, biomedical research, materials science, and other data- and compute-intensive fields. AMA27/Kitsune will be a central resource of the Stony Brook Supercomputing Center (SBSC).
The Research Scientist will work with faculty, students, researchers, and research-computing staff on AI/ML, data science, computational science, and computer science applications. The position is intended for an early-career scientist who wants to develop deeper expertise in AI/ML and high-performance computing while helping researchers run reliable and reproducible workflows on the supercomputing platform. All work must follow the policies and procedures of SBSC, IACS, Stony Brook University, and the National Science Foundation.
The position provides hands-on experience with AI/ML software, GPU and high performance computing, and large-scale research computing.
Primary Purpose:
The Research Scientist will work with users across scientific disciplines, with particular emphasis on AI/ML workloads and research workflows. Responsibilities include:
● Work with researchers to develop, run, troubleshoot, and improve AI/ML, data science, and computational workflows.
● Teach users how to work with machine learning frameworks, GPU-enabled computing, reproducible software environments, and the supercomputing platform.
● Assist with model training and inference, data processing, software configuration, debugging, benchmarking, and performance analysis on HPC systems.
● Learn and apply SBSC tools and operational practices and follow applicable requirements for research activities and data management.
The role provides substantial hands-on work with modern AI/ML software stacks and large-scale computing in support of the national research community.
Job Duties:
● Support AI/ML and scientific applications on the supercomputing platform. Install and configure software, assist with model training and inference, debug problems, benchmark workloads, analyze performance, and help users make effective use of GPU and other accelerator resources.
● Work with faculty, researchers, students, and research-computing staff to develop and improve AI/ML, data science, and computational workflows. Assist with data preparation, reproducibility, scaling, and efficient use of shared computing resources.
● Provide user support and training through technical consultations, documentation, tutorials, office hours, workshops, and presentations. Teach researchers how to use AI/ML frameworks and research-computing tools effectively.
● Test, troubleshoot, and maintain research software environments, including machine learning libraries, containers, compilers, schedulers, and related tools. Develop and maintain technical documentation and web resources.
● Contribute to project coordination, reports, presentations, publications, and research or training proposals under the guidance of senior staff and faculty.
