PhD Student (f/m/d) Project Quantification of Positronium Lifetime as a Novel Imaging Biomarker

Your tasks and responsibilities:

• You will work with Siemens Healthineers and the University Hospital Tübingen
• The doctoral research will be carried out in Tübingen within the Department of Nuclear Medicine and Clinical Molecular Imaging within the doctoral programme of the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen
• You will join the Total-Body PET Physics Group at the University Hospital Tübingen and contribute to one of the most exciting emerging directions in molecular imaging, the positronium imaging
• You will explore the previously unexplored potential of positronium imaging to provide complementary biological information beyond conventional PET by probing the microscopic tissue environment through fundamental particle physics
• The overall aim of this project is to develop the methodological and computational foundations required to transform positronium imaging from an experimental concept into a robust quantitative imaging technique for future clinical applications
• The project spans the complete translational imaging pipeline, from methodological developments in PET physics, novel image reconstruction and analysis algorithms to phantom experiments, in vivo imaging studies and the quantitative analysis of clinical total-body PET data
• You will work closely with physicists, clinicians and engineers and will have the unique opportunity to advance molecular imaging from fundamental methodology to clinical implementation
• Within the project, you will undertake international secondments at the University Medical Center Groningen, King's College London and the Medical University of Vienna, providing advanced training in multi tracer PET imaging and novel imaging methods
• In addition, you will participate in the structured scientific and transferable-skills programme of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Network, including international mentoring and exposure to both academic and industrial research environments

Your qualifications and experience:

• You have successfully completed studies in Physics, Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science or alike (masters degree or equivalent)
• Ideally you have skills in C++ and/or Python
• Experience with medical imaging data will be a benefit
• You are ready to work in a radiation protection control area

Your attributes and skills:

• You have very good English skills, German is a plus
• You have good communication skills (for cooperating in a multi-disciplinary environment)
• You are willing to travel and are flexible
