Senior Robotics Engineer, Data & Perception
Senior Robotics Engineer, Data & Perception
Location: Los Angeles, California, United StatesEmployment Type: Full-Time
Department: Engineering
About the Opportunity
A fast-growing, venture-backed advanced manufacturing company is building a new model for complex manufacturing, starting with electrical wire harnesses. This organization operates its own manufacturing facilities, producing complex electrical assemblies for some of the largest aerospace and defense companies in the country. Its long-term mission is to transform complex manufacturing through software, robotics, and automation, helping bring more production back to the U.S.
The company is looking for a Senior Robotics Engineer, Data & Perception to own the technical implementation of the data and perception layer across its Automation Program. You'll build the cameras, sensors, data pipelines, and computer vision systems that turn activity on production lines into useful information for factory software, industrial engineers, and robots
What You'll Do
Design and deploy camera and sensor instrumentation across manufacturing workstations and robotic cells.
Select, configure, calibrate, and synchronize cameras, sensors, and edge-computing hardware for reliable operation on the production floor.
Build and maintain the factory data infrastructure, including pipelines and storage systems for video, sensor, and robot data.
Connect production data to jobs, operations, parts, and workflows within the company's in-house factory software.
Develop and deploy computer vision systems for inspection, step and activity recognition, part detection, wire detection, and robotic cell sensing.
Train, deploy, monitor, and improve perception models using real-world production data.
Build automated measurement capabilities, including time studies, production step logs, and photo records.
Turn production-floor data into actionable information for manufacturing planning, pricing, quality, and process improvement.
Develop demonstration-capture, labeling, dataset-management, and evaluation infrastructure in collaboration with the Senior Robotics Engineer, Robot Learning.
Provide reliable perception and data capabilities that support robotic manipulation, production automation, and learned robotic skills.
Establish data governance practices, including technician consent, access controls, and secure handling of export-controlled and customer data.
Evaluate external vendors, platforms, and technology solutions, determining when it makes more sense to build internally or adopt existing tools.
Establish engineering standards and best practices for production data and perception systems.
Help hire, mentor, and develop engineers as the data and perception team grows.
What We're Looking For
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related technical field, or equivalent hands-on experience.
Hands-on experience building and deploying production data infrastructure or perception systems, ideally in a technical leadership capacity.
Strong computer vision experience, including training, deploying, and monitoring models using real-world camera data.
Experience working with physical-world applications in manufacturing, robotics, logistics, industrial automation, or similar environments.
Data engineering experience handling large volumes of video, sensor, or robotic data, including capture, pipelines, storage, labeling, and evaluation.
Practical experience with cameras and sensors on physical hardware, including selection, calibration, synchronization, and edge computing.
Strong programming skills in Python and SQL.
Experience with a deep learning framework such as PyTorch.
Familiarity with deploying systems across cloud and edge environments.
Working knowledge of C++ or the ability to use it when performance requirements demand it.
Experience rapidly prototyping, testing on real hardware, and iterating toward reliable production systems.
Ability to own a technical area end to end, work effectively with other senior engineers, and communicate clearly with technicians, engineers, and leadership.
Must be a U.S. Person as defined under ITAR requirements.
Preferred Experience
Experience building computer vision systems for manufacturing inspection, activity recognition, object detection, or industrial monitoring.
Familiarity with multi-camera systems, video processing, sensor fusion, and synchronized data capture.
Experience with edge hardware and deploying machine learning models in resource-constrained environments.
Background in robotics perception, factory automation, or industrial data platforms.
Experience building data infrastructure for robot learning, including teleoperation, demonstration capture, dataset labeling, and model evaluation.
Familiarity with cloud data platforms, distributed data processing, and large-scale video storage.
Experience establishing data governance, access control, and security practices for sensitive or export-controlled data.
Previous experience at a robotics startup, advanced manufacturing company, or fast-paced engineering organization.
Experience leading technical projects, establishing engineering standards, or mentoring other engineers.
Why This Role
This is an opportunity to build the foundational data and perception systems behind a new generation of automated manufacturing.
You'll work on technology that connects the physical world to the software and intelligence that drive modern factories. The cameras, sensors, pipelines, and models you develop will directly support production robotics, robot learning, industrial engineering, and quality improvement.
Your work won't stop at collecting data or building models. You'll see those capabilities deployed on actual production lines, helping robots understand their environment and helping engineers measure and improve how complex products are made.
The company has raised over $112 million from leading venture capital investors and opened a new 80,000-square-foot manufacturing facility in Los Angeles, California. It is investing in the infrastructure needed to scale its manufacturing and automation operations.
You'll join a small, senior engineering team with significant ownership, direct collaboration with the cofounder and Head of AI & Robotics, and the opportunity to shape a critical technical foundation as the company grows.
