Success Characteristics

Client Relationship Mastery

A successful Director, Client Services builds and sustains trusted advisor relationships with senior client stakeholders. They anticipate client needs before they are voiced, navigate complex organizational dynamics with ease, and consistently deliver commitments in ways that deepen loyalty and expand engagement.

Strategic Business Development Mindset

Success means identifying whitespace opportunities, connecting client challenges to practice capabilities, and actively contributing to pipeline development and proposal efforts. They think like a business owner, not just a service manager.

Delivery Excellence & Accountability

They hold themselves and their teams to high delivery standards. A successful director ensures engagements are scoped clearly, staffed appropriately, and executed with quality and efficiency. They course-correct proactively when engagements drift and protect both client outcomes and firm margins.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

They work fluidly across practice areas, operations, and leadership. They break down silos, connect dots between teams, and rally internal resources in service of client success — without needing formal authority to get things done.

Operational & Commercial Acumen

They understand the business of consulting utilization, margins, SOW management, and revenue recognition. They use tools like Kantata and CRM platforms fluently to keep delivery and business development data clean, current, and actionable.

Adaptive Communication

They flex their communication style for the audience, executive briefings, client workshops, internal stakeholders, or at-risk conversations. They are clear, credible, and composed, even in high-stakes situations.

Outcomes Orientation

They define success in terms of measurable client impact, not just activity. They set clear KPIs, track progress rigorously, and hold the line on scope in ways that protect value for both the client and the firm.

Resilience & Composure Under Pressure

Consulting engagements rarely go exactly to plan. A successful director stays steady when things get complicated, resourceful, solution-focused, and calm in moments that would unsettle a less seasoned leader.

Integrity & Professional Credibility

They show up consistently, follow through, and tell clients the truth.

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

This role operates primarily in a professional remote environment. The position requires the ability to work at a computer for extended periods and may involve travel to client sites, industry events, and Red Clay office locations as needed.
