Director of Market Engineering
Reporting to the VP of Engineering, the Director of Market Engineering leads Omni Fiber's Market Engineering Lead team and serves as the organization's primary technical authority for fiber design and vendor escalations. This role owns market-level design strategy, sets and enforces vendor direction, and is the escalation point for engineering judgment calls that fall outside standard design parameters. This is a full-time, remote opportunity with regular travel for business planning.
The Director of Market Engineering ensures every market moves through design, permitting, and construction on a clear, documented plan, with vendors held accountable to defined standards and cross-functional partners (Construction, Permitting, GIS) aligned on technical escalations and associated fallout.
Key Duties:
Team Leadership:
• Lead, coach, and develop a team of Market Engineering Leads and other technical resources, each responsible for end-to-end design ownership, vendor direction, and delivery sequencing within their assigned market(s).
• Support hiring, onboarding, and career progression for the Market Engineering Lead team.
• Serve as the primary technical escalation point for judgment calls that exceed a Market Engineering Lead's defined decision authority.
Vendor Direction and Standards:
• Set design intent and scope direction for engineering vendors at the program level; review first-pass quality trends and hold vendors accountable to defined delivery and quality standards.
• Partner with the engineering standards function to maintain and enforce consistent design standards across all markets.
• Approve go/no-go decisions and material scope changes for markets under active design or construction.
Cross-Functional Coordination
• Partner with Construction, Permitting/PMO, and GIS to keep market sequencing, permitting timelines, and build plans aligned from a technical perspective, ensuring that fallout is communicated clearly regarding technical decisions, field changes, or other pivots initiated during the program.
• Represent engineering's position clearly in cross-functional planning discussions and resolve direction disputes between engineering and other functions.
• Monitor market-level delivery performance, including but not limited to on-time delivery, vendor first-pass acceptance, escaped defect rate, and cost-per-pass variance, driving corrective action where needed.
Technical Ownership
• Maintain deep working knowledge of aerial, underground, and fiber design and construction practices.
• Review and provide final technical direction on complex design tradeoffs (cost vs. quality, routing, cabinet placement) that carry material cost or schedule impact.
• Support the adoption and oversight of automated QC tooling, ensuring it is validated against real design outcomes before broad reliance.
Qualifications
• 10+ years of relevant experience
• Prior experience leading or managing a technical engineering team, with direct people-management responsibility.
• Deep working knowledge of aerial, buried, underground, and fiber design and construction.
• High understanding and general proficiency with GIS/Esri and CAD-based design and QC tools.
• Demonstrated ability to hold vendors and internal teams accountable to technical standards and delivery commitments.
• Strong cross-functional communication skills, with the ability to represent engineering's position clearly to Construction, Permitting, and executive leadership.
• Comfortable making and defending high-stakes technical tradeoffs under time pressure.
• Ability to distinguish between general audience and confidential information, and to maintain confidentiality at all times.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and recognize which require immediate attention.
• Must have and maintain a valid driver's license and a reasonable driving record.
• Willing to travel for business planning meetings as needed.
