Job Title: Night Custodian � Lead Custodial Role
Location: Octorara Area School District, Atglen, Pennsylvania
Reports To: Director of Buildings and Grounds
Employment Type: Full-Time, Year-Round
Hours: Typically 3:00 PM � 11:00 PM (may vary depending on events)
Position Summary:
The Night Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, and secure environment across school district facilities during evening hours. This position includes oversight and direction of contracted custodial employees and acts as the primary contact for custodial support during after-hours school events and functions.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine custodial duties, including cleaning classrooms, hallways, restrooms, offices, cafeterias, gymnasiums, and other school spaces.
- Secure and lock buildings at the end of shift or after events.
- Monitor and direct the work of contracted custodial staff during the evening shift to ensure cleanliness standards, efficiency, and safety protocols are met.
- Coordinate custodial response and support for scheduled evening school events, meetings, and functions, ensuring proper set up and tear down following functions.
- Serve as the evening point-of-contact for school staff, event organizers, and building administrators regarding custodial needs.
- Report maintenance or safety concerns to the appropriate supervisor or maintenance department.
- Maintain accurate records of cleaning schedules, supply inventory, and event support requirements.
- Ensure compliance with district safety procedures and all applicable regulations.
- Respond to emergency custodial situations (e.g., spills, weather-related incidents, restroom issues) promptly and effectively.
- Train new evening custodial staff or contracted personnel as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Qualifications:
Required:
- High school diploma or GED
- Prior custodial or janitorial experience in a school or institutional setting
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb ladders, and perform physically demanding tasks
- Strong communication and leadership skills
- Ability to work independently and manage others effectively
- Willingness to work flexible hours, including evenings and occasional weekends
Preferred:
- Supervisory or team lead experience
- Familiarity with OSHA standards and proper use of custodial equipment and cleaning chemicals
- Knowledge of basic building systems (e.g., HVAC, lighting, security systems)
Clearances Required:
- Pennsylvania State Police Criminal Record Check (Act 34)
- Child Abuse Clearance (Act 151)
- FBI Federal Criminal History Background Check (Act 114)
- Mandated Reporter Training and other district-required trainings
Work Environment:
- Indoor/outdoor work in various weather conditions
- Interaction with staff, students, community members, and vendors
- As an essential person, evening (and some weekend) work required, depending on school schedules and events
