National Debt Relief (NDR) is seeking a Data Engineer to join our Data Engineering team and help build, operate, and improve the data platform that supports analytics and decision-making across the business. Reporting to the Senior Data Engineering Manager, this role will work across our Snowflake-based platform, including ingestion, orchestration, transformation, and analytics-ready data models.

We are an AI-first engineering team, and AI coding agents are a core part of how we develop and maintain our platform. Success in this role requires strong technical judgment, a clear understanding of the systems and data you support, and ownership of production outcomes. The ideal candidate brings strong SQL and data modeling fundamentals, strong depth in at least one area of the modern data stack, and the ability to work effectively across the broader platform. This role is well suited for an engineer who is curious, proactive, and focused on delivering reliable, maintainable data solutions.

Essential Duties/Responsibilites

  • Own data engineering projects end to end across ingestion, orchestration, transformation, and the analytics layer, including loosely scoped ones, from defining scope through verified delivery.
  • Develop and maintain Python-based ingestion pipelines when custom pipelines are required, integrating data from APIs and third-party systems.
  • Design and build data pipelines and workflows using dbt, Python, Dagster, and Snowflake, making sound modeling and design decisions within the established architecture.
  • Use AI coding agents as a core part of daily work, directing them effectively and taking full responsibility for reviewing and verifying everything you ship.
  • Ensure data quality and trust through testing, data contracts, and automated alerting.
  • Monitor and support production pipelines, including morning load failures (Eastern Time working hours), on-call rotation, and incident triage.
  • Manage Snowflake infrastructure and access controls for sensitive data through infrastructure-as-code, following security, governance, and privacy standards.
  • Optimize Snowflake performance and manage compute costs through efficient query design, warehouse tuning, and resource utilization monitoring.
  • Identify opportunities to improve the platform and turn them into well-defined work; evaluate requirements critically and escalate decisions beyond your scope with recommended solutions.
  • Collaborate with engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders through code review, documentation, and active participation in team discussions.

Education/Experience

  • 4+ years of experience in data engineering, analytics engineering, or data warehouse development.
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant technical field, or equivalent practical experience.
  • Experience using Python to retrieve and integrate data from APIs.
  • Experience with CI/CD workflows, version control, and automated testing for data pipelines.
  • Experience in financial services or related industries preferred
  • Experience with Terraform or similar infrastructure-as-code tooling preferred.
  • Experience with semantic layers, metric definitions, or BI tools preferred.

Required Skills/Abilities

  • Strong SQL and data modeling skills, including the ability to define appropriate grain and keys, design incremental strategies, organize models into maintainable layers, and make sound tradeoffs between simplicity, performance, and usability.
  • Working proficiency across dbt, Dagster, and Snowflake, with familiarity with Python and infrastructure-as-code. Strong depth in at least one area of the stack and the judgment to know when to pull in additional expertise.
  • Demonstrated proficiency using AI coding agents, including providing clear context and constraints, breaking work into effective tasks, and critically reviewing generated code and outputs.
  • Ability to diagnose data and pipeline issues across multiple layers of the platform, identify root causes, and distinguish one-off failures from systemic problems that require a more durable solution.
  • Ownership mindset: acting on problems in your area without waiting for assignment and treating work as done when the data is right, not when the pull request merges.
  • Develop a strong understanding of the pipelines and data domains you support, including key dependencies, business logic, failure modes, and downstream consumers.
  • Clear, timely, and proactive written communication, including raising blockers early.
  • Business acumen and skill at translating business needs into technical solutions.
  • Effective prioritization across multiple projects while keeping progress visible.

National Debt Relief Role Qualifications:

  • Computer competency and ability to work with a computer.
  • Prioritize multiple tasks and projects simultaneously.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Punctuality expected, ready to report to work on a consistent basis.
  • Attain and maintain high performance expectations on a monthly basis.
  • Work in a fast-paced, high-volume setting.
  • Use and navigate multiple computer systems with exceptional multi-tasking skills.
  • Remain calm and professional during difficult discussions.
  • Take constructive feedback.
  • Available for full-time position.
