Overview:
Serves as a Data Engineer responsible for the design, development, support, and optimization of data pipelines, integrations, and analytics solutions that enable operational reporting, regulatory compliance, and technology decision-making across the organization.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Work closely with Technology management, senior engineers, business partners, and support teams to design, develop, maintain, and enhance data pipelines, ETL processes, and reporting solutions.
- Develop and support integrations with internal and external data sources through APIs, databases, file-based exchanges, and enterprise platforms.
- Regularly and independently interact with business partners of varying associate and management levels to understand business needs, gather requirements, and translate them into technical solutions.
- Create, maintain, and improve data models, data quality controls, data transformation processes, and operational monitoring capabilities.
- Support the development and maintenance of dashboards, analytics products, and reporting solutions using enterprise reporting and visualization tools.
- Participate in troubleshooting data issues, pipeline failures, and performance bottlenecks while working with senior engineers to identify long-term solutions.
- Facilitate meetings and discussions with internal stakeholders, vendors, and technical teams to support project delivery and operational objectives.
- Seek to expand knowledge and understanding of data engineering, analytics, cloud technologies, and financial services practices on a continuous basis.
- Follow and promote the use of industry best practices, coding standards, data governance standards, and operational procedures.
- Maintain a working knowledge of systems and services supported by the department. Understand and adhere to the Company's risk and regulatory standards, policies, and controls in accordance with the Company's Risk Appetite. Identify risk-related issues requiring escalation to management.
- Promote an environment that supports belonging and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
- Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of audit findings and remediation activities, as applicable.
- Complete other related duties as assigned.
Scope of Responsibilities:
 This position will contribute to the development and support of enterprise data products, ETL pipelines, analytics platforms, and operational reporting solutions. The engineer will work under the guidance of senior team members while independently delivering assigned work and supporting production operations.
Education and Experience Required:
Combined minimum of 5 years’ higher education and/or work experience in systems design, management and/or architecture
Experience with one or more programming languages such as Python, SQL, Java, or similar technologies.
Experience querying and analyzing data using relational databases.
Understanding of ETL processes, data transformation techniques, and data quality practices.
Education and Experience Preferred:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Analytics, Information Systems, Engineering, Mathematics, or related field.
Minimum 5 years’ professional experience in a technical engineering position involving infrastructure design technologies, data management and interchange, system design and / or development for complex applications
Experience working with APIs, file-based integrations, and enterprise data sources.
Familiarity with reporting and visualization tools such as Power BI or similar platforms.
Ability to translate business requirements into practical technical solutions.
Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills.
Strong problem-solving abilities.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team environment.
Understanding of how applications, databases, and data platforms interact with broader enterprise systems.

Exposure to cloud platforms, containers, DevOps practices, source control systems (Git), or workflow automation tools is a plus.
