Overview

Build the Future

At McGraw Hill, we are dedicated to delivering digital learning experiences that transform education for learners and educators. Our focus is on creating seamless, impactful products that truly benefit our users while supporting growth and collaboration across teams. We foster a culture that values innovation, teamwork, and a balance between career growth and personal well-being.

How can you make an impact?

Our engineering teams are looking for experienced, adaptable people who bring independent creativity and thrive on a collaborative team. You bring a sense of personal accountability, curiosity about new technologies and methods, and persistence in solving complex problems—while respecting timelines and team commitments.

We're hiring a Software Engineer II for our Enterprise Platform Engineering Global Identity Team, which owns identity and onboarding services within our EdTech Platform-as-a-Service (ePaaS). The team's mission includes being a proactive partner to new McGraw Hill acquisitions and customer-facing platforms, making their onboarding to ePaaS faster and easier.

This role partners with leaders, peers, and teams across the organization to help deliver on the ePaaS mission of easy-to-use, fast, reliable, cost-effective, secure, and scalable services. This role builds solid, reliable code and contributes meaningfully to the team's goals. They are increasing in independence and skill, starting to tackle moderately complex features, and building collaborative confidence. This includes end-to-end delivery (tech design, development, and testing) and ongoing quality, performance, and availability of our products.

We value a growth mindset, clear communication, and a focus on delivering real value to our teachers and students—not just shipping features. The ability to learn and adapt matters more than knowing every technology in our stack. If that sounds like you, we want you to apply!

This is a remote position open to applicants authorized to work for any employer within Canada.

What You'll Do

  • Write reliable, maintainable code. Perform some refactoring or improving quality independently.
  • Take on medium-scope features and deliver them with minimal handholding.
  • Communicate assumptions. Perform thoughtful code reviews and ensure adherence to coding standards and best practices.
  • Participate in design discussions and start influencing technical decisions.
  • Own medium complexity features. Begin to learn to unblock yourself and others.
  • Understand product requirements. Suggest improvements.
  • Offer help to newer teammates. Ask for feedback to improve.
  • Present a passion for the ePaaS mission.

Who You Are

  • You have demonstrated delivering value in a modern engineering environment, working across the full tech stack.
  • You design APIs that are meant to be consumed by others, so ease of use, simplistic design, and other attributes that benefit interoperability are key.
  • You believe in understanding why work is being done and empathizing with the users, not just implementing code and moving onto the next task.
  • You are outspoken in your beliefs and seek out and use data to drive decisions to help your team and project succeed.
  • You have demonstrated software delivery experience with a distributed product & engineering team.
  • You enjoy researching new technologies and methodologies and have a keen desire to dig into complex technical issues.
  • You can work in a fast-paced software release environment, where you continuously deliver production-grade software daily for a system with millions of users around the world.
  • You have contributed to the full software development life cycle, including writing application code, unit/integration/automation tests, documentation, and performance and security engineering.

What You Bring:

    • In depth knowledge of software development and adoption, ideally in EdTech preferred.
    • Experience aligned with our tech stack, including:
      • Languages: Go, Java, NodeJS, TypeScript, SQL
      • Frameworks: Angular, Spring Boot
      • Containerization: Docker
      • Cloud: Amazon Web Services (AWS): ECS, RDS, Lambda, and many other services
      • Tools: Github, Copilot, NewRelic, DataDog, JIRA, Confluence, Zoom, Slack, and Office 365
      • Databases: MySQL, PostgreSQL, DynamoDB

Why work for us?

The work you do at McGraw Hill will be work that matters. We are collectively building experiences that will help shape the future of education. Play your part and experience a sense of fulfilment that will inspire you to even greater heights.

The pay range for this position is between $107,000-$128,000 CAD annually. However, base pay offered may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, experience, and location.
An annual bonus plan may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical and/or other benefits, depending on the position offered.
