Fables - Visual Development Artist
Project Overview
Fables is a dark animated anthology series of contemporary fairytales. Episode runtimes range from 5 to 12 minutes and span multiple mediums and genres with strong folkloric elements throughout.
Job Summary
We are seeking Visual Development Artists for the first season of Fables. The Visual Development Artist will be responsible for creating the artistic look of individual episode visuals including character designs, environment designs, prop designs, mood illustrations, color scripts and more.
This role will report to their Episodic Director, and at some point, the Episodic Producer.
What you will do
- Create character, environment, and prop designs that support the narrative themes and emotional tone of the episode.
- Produce exploratory sketches, color scripts and storyboard paint-overs to help guide layout and composite direction.
- Collaborate closely with your directors, production designers, and story artists to iterate on visual direction to ensure the final product aligns with the project's vision.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Previous experience working within a 2D and 3D animation pipeline.
- Deep understanding of human and animal anatomy, composition, shape language and color theory.
- Proficiency in drawing, a strong grasp of perspective, and the ability to use Photoshop and a 3D viewing software such as Blender or Maya.
- Ability to present work, receive feedback, and collaborate effectively with a team.
This is a paid freelance contract position beginning in January 2027 and continuing through late summer 2027
