About the role
Lav Games creates projects ranging from its own original IPs to AAA co-development. The company is looking for a specialist to create realistic, high-quality materials and textures that meet the artistic and technical standards of AAA game production. The role involves developing procedural materials, creating reusable material libraries, implementing shaders, and ensuring visual consistency and technical efficiency across game assets and environments.
Responsibilities
- Create high-quality, realistic, and visually appealing materials and textures that meet AAA game production standards. Develop procedural and tileable materials using Substance Designer, ensuring visual quality, consistency, and reusability.
- Create natural, architectural, and hard-surface materials with a focus on realism and physical accuracy. Develop and maintain efficient master materials, material instances, and shaders in Unreal Engine and/or proprietary engines.
- Create trim sheets, texture atlases, and reusable material libraries. Optimize materials for real-time rendering while maintaining high visual fidelity.
- Collaborate with Environment Artists, Prop Artists, and the Art Director to establish consistent material quality across assets and environments. Research real-world references to reproduce surface properties, aging, wear, damage, and environmental effects.
- Ensure the technical and artistic quality of delivered materials, collaborating with team members, production, and management to achieve project goals on time.
Requirements
- Minimum of 5 years of experience creating materials and textures for video games. Ability to receive, give, and apply feedback effectively.
- Expert knowledge of Substance Designer, including procedural material creation, node-based workflows, and graph optimization. Proficiency in Substance Painter and a strong understanding of texturing workflows and material authoring.
- Strong understanding of physically based rendering (PBR), material properties, and realistic surface reproduction. Experience creating and implementing materials and shaders in Unreal Engine, including master materials, material instances, and Material Editor workflows.
- Strong understanding of tileable textures, trim sheets, texture atlases, and efficient UV/material workflows. Knowledge of advanced material techniques such as vertex blending, world-aligned textures, masks, and layered materials.
- Understanding of texture optimization, shader complexity, memory budgets, and real-time rendering constraints. Strong artistic eye for color, roughness, reflectivity, surface variation, and material definition.
- Ability to analyze references and reproduce believable materials with attention to detail, scale, and environmental storytelling. Knowledge of current game art production processes, technical limitations, and dependencies.
- Availability within the Central European Time zone (UTC±2 hours).
Benefits
- Remote work with flexible working hours. Competitive salaries and opportunities for career growth and development. Generous paid time off, including vacation, sick days, and personal days. Training and skill-building opportunities to stay up to date with industry technologies and trends.
- The company also offers performance-based bonuses and profit sharing, allowing employees to benefit from the company's success.
