Software Architect / AI Lead

We are looking for a hands-on AI Engineering Lead who combines software architecture, team leadership, and practical AI engineering. This is a role for someone who can quickly understand a complex existing system, define where it should go next, and lead a team to get there, while keeping the live product stable for its users.

About the project 

The product is a SaaS platform for the U.S. healthcare insurance domain. It helps customers read, collect, and process large volumes of insurance-related data and connects to multiple data sources in different ways. It is a multi-tier system with data warehouse, middleware, and front-end layers, built on the .NET stack (ASP.NET MVC and Web API, message queuing, Windows services, and a set of microservices) with MS SQL. The product is live and in active use, and the company is now preparing its next stage: modernizing the platform and bringing an AI-driven approach to architecture and development so that new functionality reaches users faster. Which parts move to a new architecture, which new services are built with an AI-driven approach, and what stays as it is are exactly the decisions this role will help shape.

What success looks like: in your first two months you get to know the system and the team, shape the first version of the target architecture together with our Engineering Manager, and present a small proof of concept. By month three, the goal is an agreed plan, development running at a steady pace, and first practical results on one to three new modules or features. By month six, the new team is delivering new functionality on the agreed architecture.

Requirements: 

• Proven experience as a Software / Application or Solution Architect, combined with a Team Lead role

• Strong .NET / C# background across ASP.NET Framework and ASP.NET Core, including migration from .NET Framework to modern .NET

• Hands-on front-end experience with Angular and React: the current front end is built on Angular, and React is a likely direction for new modules given its strong support in AI-driven and agentic development

• Practical experience designing and running solutions on Azure Cloud: Web Apps, Azure Container Apps, Service Bus, Key Vault, networking (VNets, private endpoints), Cosmos DB and Application Insights

• Hands-on experience modernizing brownfield or legacy systems: auditing an existing system, defining a target architecture, writing specifications, and planning a phased migration

• Mature architecture practice: documenting decisions as ADRs, defining and measuring non-functional requirements (performance, scalability, availability, security, observability), and explaining trade-offs to technical and business stakeholders

• Around 1+ year of practical AI Engineering (AI SDLC / Agentic Engineering) experience: spec-driven development, agentic coding tools, context engineering, AI-assisted review and testing, and readiness to write code yourself, not only to lead

• Strong quality engineering mindset: test strategy, automated testing and CI/CD quality gates, especially for AI-generated code

• Experience teaching and coaching engineers in AI-driven development through workshops, pairing and hands-on examples, and turning individual practices into team standards

• Experience across several projects and different architectures, not just one system

• Experience managing an engineering team and introducing AI-driven approaches into delivery

Nice to have: 

• Experience in the healthcare or insurance domain (HIPAA, working with sensitive data)

• Experience in a product company or a startup, or your own side project or business

• Experience building AI capabilities into products (LLM integration, RAG, evaluations)

• Ability to move fast with lean processes and a clear focus on business results

Responsibilities:

• Go through knowledge transfer and build a deep understanding of the existing product, its architecture and integrations

• Define and agree on non-functional requirements with the Engineering Manager and the business, and use them as the basis for architecture decisions

• Define the target architecture and a phased modernization strategy: what to rewrite, what to keep (including integrations) and what to move into separate services

• Record key decisions as ADRs, turn them into clear architecture artifacts and specifications, and validate them together with the Engineering Manager

• Build a proof of concept, then lead the implementation of new modules and features while staying hands-on in the code

• Act as Team Lead: own the team’s technical delivery, run design and code reviews, and grow engineers through mentoring and pairing

• Teach the team AI-SDLC and Agentic Engineering through regular workshops and work on real tasks, and maintain a shared team playbook (specs, agent instructions, review checklists)

• Assess the current team, form the new core team, and build trust and effective collaboration within it

• Make sure the current product stays stable in production throughout the transition

Schedule: 5/2, full-time, approximately 11:00–19:00 Kyiv time. Occasional meetings may run until 19:00–20:00 because of collaboration with the team in the U.S. Daily team meeting at 15:00 Kyiv time.
