Overview

An early-stage B2B SaaS company in Dublin is building out its foundational engineering team and hiring its first Head of Engineering.

This role could suit someone who has reached Lead Engineer or Technical Lead level and is ready for the next step into broader engineering leadership.

The plan is for this person to become the next CTO.

This is a player-coach role, so being a strong software engineer is essential.

What You'll Be Doing

• Contribute to architecture and technical decision-making
• Take part in code reviews
• Solve difficult engineering problems
• Gradually take ownership of hiring
• Help shape engineering standards
• Support delivery across the team
• Take ownership of the wider engineering function over time

What You'll Need to Succeed

• Strong software engineering fundamentals
• Experience as a Lead Engineer, Technical Lead, Staff Engineer, Principal Engineer, or hands-on Engineering Manager
• Comfort mentoring and influencing other engineers
• Interest in stepping into broader engineering leadership
• Experience with distributed systems, high-throughput platforms, or other technically demanding products
• Interest in modern cloud-native environments
• Exposure to Go and TypeScript is relevant, though exact technology match is not required
• Genuine interest in AI-native engineering and how tools like Claude Code can improve how teams build software

Interview Process

There will be a hands-on pair-programming exercise as part of the interview.

For this stage, candidates will be asked to code without Claude, ChatGPT, Copilot, or other AI assistance. The aim is simply to assess comfort with working through a coding problem directly when needed.

Expectations will be clearly explained in advance.
