Responsibilities

About the Role

Build the platforms that power patient access, and help a growing engineering team do the best work of their careers.

As a Sr. Principal Platform Engineer at Hummingbird, you’ll be the technical anchor for the team that builds our production platforms. You’ll spend most of your day hands on in the code: designing and building features, making the architecture decisions that shape our applications, and reviewing the work of earlier-career engineers so the whole team grows stronger. You’ll bring deep, independent engineering skill to the work and use AI tools to move faster without relying on them to do the thinking for you.

You’ll work closely with your team and partner regularly with IT Security and Data and Analytics to keep our systems connected, reliable, and built to last. For a few engineers just starting their careers, you’ll be the person who helps them understand not just what we build, but why we build it the way we do.

What You’ll Do

• Build and maintain the core of our production platforms, spending most of your time hands on in the codebase.

• Own the architecture decisions for our production applications, choosing where logic should live and how systems should connect.

• Review pull requests and designs from earlier-career engineers, reinforcing standards for quality and consistency.

• Mentor engineers who are early in their careers, helping them understand the reasoning behind technical decisions.

• Develop across the full stack, working in both front-end and back-end code as the work requires.

• Partner with IT Security and Data and Analytics to align on data access, integration, and system design.

• Troubleshoot complex technical issues, from failed integrations to system reliability problems, and resolve them at the root.

• Use AI-powered development tools to speed up delivery while keeping full ownership of quality and design judgment.

• Document decisions and tradeoffs so the team can build consistently and maintain systems over time.

The Details

• Employment Eligibility: Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the United States without sponsorship

• Work Location: Remote. You must work from a location within the United States with consistent Internet service

• Work Type: Full-time

• Compensation: Expected range is $162,500 to $211,250. New hires usually start between $162,500 and $195,000, depending on experience and internal equity.

• Benefits: Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage; paid time off; 401(k); parental leave; career development support; and more

Required & Desired Skills

What You’ll Bring

• 8 to 10+ years of software engineering experience, with deep hands-on skill building and shipping production systems.

• Strong, independent programming ability across the full stack, working comfortably in both front-end and back-end code.

• Hands-on experience with our stack or closely related technologies: TypeScript, Python, React, and Vite.

• Strong system design and architecture skills, with the judgment to review designs and sign off on technical direction.

• A track record of mentoring and growing earlier-career engineers, including those in their first role out of school.

• A process-oriented mindset and the ability to reinforce standards through code and design review.

• Comfort using AI-powered development tools to work faster, paired with the discipline not to rely on them for core engineering judgment.

Nice to Have

• A computer science degree or equivalent formal background in software engineering.

• Experience in a start-up or fast-paced environment where you’ve built structure while moving quickly.

• Background working in regulated, secure, or high-trust environments such as healthcare.

What Helps You Shine

• Please note that we use both your resume and your written and oral communication throughout the hiring process to understand your fit for this role.

• Thoughtful, clear responses help us see your attention to detail, your professionalism, and your ability to communicate with care, all skills that are essential for success on our team.

Expectations for Focus & Presence

• To support patients and each other, this role requires your full attention during scheduled work hours. Our Outside Employment Policy doesn’t allow overlapping work or “job stacking,” so any outside work must happen fully outside your Hummingbird schedule.

• We’re a camera-ready team, and you’ll need to be on camera during training and when needed during the workday after training ends.

• We value connection, teamwork, and being present, which is what keeps our patients safe and our team supported. If that’s what you’re looking for, you’ll feel at home here. If you’re hoping to hold another job during the same hours, this job won’t be the best match.

Growth at Hummingbird

This role is a key step in our engineering career path. You’ll receive support, collaboration, and real technical ownership from day one, with the chance to shape our platforms, grow the engineers around you, and take on broader architectural influence over time. At Hummingbird, we believe good jobs should lead somewhere, and that starts here.

A Note on Authentic Interviews

We believe the best hiring conversations are real ones. Notes are welcome, and jotting things down during the call is completely fine. What we ask is that you don’t use AI tools or similar assistance to generate your responses in real time. We’re genuinely trying to get to know you: how you think, how you communicate, and what you’ve experienced. That connection matters to us, and it’s hard to find when answers are scripted rather than interactive.

We’re a team that makes healthcare more human. We’d love to meet the person behind your application.

The Hummingbird Approach
We value a team that brings diverse perspectives and experiences to the work we do. While there are many ways to do this, people who are successful at Hummingbird:

• Lead with Respect by valuing kindness and working to actively foster an environment of inclusion and respect.
• Embrace Growth and seek out learning and growth for themselves and support those around them in their growth journey. They bring curiosity and an openness to innovation to all their interactions.
• Bring a Win Together mentality by approaching conflict directly, listening carefully, and seeking to understand. They problem-solve with the goal of finding successes, not trade-offs, for all involved.
