Senior Hardware Design Engineer – Electrical I/O Products

Location: Sterling Heights, MI

Pay Rate: $60–$65 per hour

Long term contract to hire

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Senior Hardware Design Engineer to design, develop, test, and troubleshoot ruggedized electrical circuit boards and hardware assemblies used in complex electronic systems.

In this role, you will work on Input/Output (I/O) products, similar to body controllers, that allow electronic systems and components to communicate with one another. You will support projects from the initial design phase through prototyping, testing, qualification, and production.

The ideal candidate has extensive electrical hardware design experience, strong printed circuit board (PCB) design skills, and the ability to troubleshoot complex hardware issues while working with cross-functional engineering teams and suppliers.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and Develop Hardware: Design electrical circuit boards, components, and subsystems for I/O products, including analog and digital circuits.
  • PCB Design: Develop schematics and PCB layouts using industry best practices for performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Build and Test Prototypes: Support hardware builds, debugging, testing, and qualification to ensure designs meet requirements.
  • Troubleshoot Technical Issues: Identify hardware failures, determine root causes, and develop corrective actions and engineering design fixes.
  • Support Production: Help transition hardware designs from concept to production and resolve issues that arise throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Work with Suppliers: Provide technical guidance, review supplier designs, and ensure hardware meets engineering requirements.
  • Manage Hardware Changes: Track design revisions, component changes, obsolete parts, and hardware updates across multiple programs.
  • Develop Technical Documentation: Create and review hardware requirements, test plans, design documentation, and technical proposals.
  • Evaluate Design Options: Participate in engineering trade studies, system architecture reviews, and technical design reviews to determine the best solutions.
  • Ensure Reliability and Compliance: Support electrical, thermal, signal integrity, electromagnetic compatibility (EMI/EMC), and military environmental testing requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Engineering.
  • 12+ years of relevant electrical hardware design experience.
  • Hands-on experience with schematic development and PCB design/layout.
  • Experience designing, debugging, and testing electrical hardware and circuit boards.
  • Ability to use engineering development and test equipment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and experience resolving hardware design issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and collaborate with engineers, suppliers, and other technical teams.

Preferred Technical Experience

Experience in several of the following areas is desirable:

  • Analog and Digital Circuit Design: Circuit development, component selection, simulation, power analysis, and thermal analysis.
  • I/O Interfaces and Communication Protocols: RS-232, RS-422, RS-485, CAN, SSI, analog, discrete, and power I/O.
  • Embedded Hardware: Microcontrollers and embedded programming using C or C++.
  • High-Speed and Computer Interfaces: PCIe, DDR memory, USB, SATA, Ethernet, LVDS, HDMI, DisplayPort, and video interfaces.
  • FPGA Design: FPGA development and simulation, particularly with Xilinx tools.
  • Signal Integrity and EMI/EMC: Designing hardware to maintain signal quality and meet electromagnetic compatibility requirements.
  • Military and Ruggedized Hardware: Experience with military design and testing standards, including MIL-STD-1275, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-464, and MIL-STD-810.
  • Reliability and Quality: Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA), reliability analysis, and Six Sigma design tools.
