We are looking for an experienced Freelance Security Researcher in Europe, Türkiye or South America to support us on challenging projects in vulnerability research, detection, and automation.

This opportunity is exclusively for independent freelancers / self-employed security professionals. We are looking to work directly with the individual performing the work and do not accept applications or proposals from agencies, consultancies, staffing companies, or other intermediaries.

As a Freelance Security Researcher, you will work independently on technically challenging security research and development tasks. Your responsibilities will include:

• Researching and developing code for complex, security-related objectives.
• Independently analyzing vulnerabilities and building systems for their automated detection.
• Designing and implementing technologies for future vulnerability analysis and the detection of new attack vectors.
• Re-implementing publicly available exploits in alternative programming languages.
• Developing detection and testing methods using techniques such as banner grabbing, authenticated protocols, and targeted product testing.
• Working confidently with a diverse range of security tools, operating systems, Git, and network protocols.

• Proven expertise in cybersecurity, gained through several years of hands-on experience across different roles, projects, or research activities.
• Strong coding skills—whether in scripting or compiled languages—with software development being a central part of your daily work.
• A genuine passion for coding, security research, vulnerability analysis, and staying ahead of emerging threats and attack techniques.
• Excellent written English communication skills.
• Motivation to shape and improve software, tooling, and processes for vulnerability detection and automation.
• An independent, structured, and proactive working style, including the ability to quickly understand, work with, and improve existing codebases.

Engagement
This is a freelance engagement, not a permanent employment position. We are specifically looking for an individual independent contractor who can collaborate directly with our team and take ownership of assigned research and development tasks.

Your Application Process at Greenbone
1. Initial meeting with the Talent Acquisition Team (Duration: 30–45 minutes)
2. Interview with the Hiring Manager and Peer (Duration: approx. 60 minutes)
3. Final interview with Department Lead or C-Level (Duration: approx. 60 minutes)
The process may vary slightly depending on the position. For some technical roles, a case study is included between the second and third interview.
