Field Hardware Engineer
Who we are:
Who you are:
Geotab is seeking a Field Hardware Technician who will support GO Focus pilots by delivering rapid onsite product validation and diagnostic support at customer and pilot sites, validating, configuring, testing and troubleshooting camera and telematics hardware, and collecting reliable training data for Geotab's AI models. Reporting into Geotab's Video Product team, you will work with Video development, Field Service, third-party installers and Geotab resellers to make sure pilots work as intended. If you love technology and are keen to join an industry leader, we would love to hear from you!
What you'll do:
The Field Hardware Technician supports Geotab's Video team by delivering rapid onsite product validation and diagnostic support for enterprise customers and pilot sites. This role validates, tests, and troubleshoots Geotab Video systems end to end, including camera and telematics hardware, connectivity, firmware and configuration, as well as creating and collecting material for training of Geotab's AI models.
The technician supports pilots from pre-pilot preparation through completion, documents field findings, and helps generate controlled training data for new computer vision behaviors when customer footage is unavailable. This role requires strong practical problem-solving skills, attention to detail, safe vehicle operation, and a willingness to travel frequently to customer and test sites. Success in this role means pilots that work as intended. You act as the eyes and ears of the Video development team on the ground, representing Geotab and providing clear, reproducible evidence of what is happening in the field.
How you'll make an impact:
- Travel to customer, partner, pilot, and test locations to validate and troubleshoot Geotab Video hardware.
- Perform pre-pilot readiness checks, configuration, and validation to confirm Geotab Video systems are set up to work as intended.
- Diagnose why a system is not working as intended, tracing symptoms such as video loss, missing events or connectivity drops across power, hardware, connectivity, SD cards, firmware and configuration.
- Own assigned validation and diagnostic activities throughout the enterprise pilot lifecycle, from preparation through pilot closeout.
- Work directly with customers, Field Service, third-party installers, resellers, and internal teams to diagnose issues, communicate evidence and coordinate resolution with the accountable owner.
- Capture accurate diagnostic information, including logs, photos, vehicle details and steps to reproduce, document completed work, and communicate findings and next steps.
- Escalate complex or recurring issues with clear technical details and supporting evidence, including Jira tickets for Video engineering.
- Maintain readiness of mobile camera kits, tools, spare parts, and other field equipment.
- Support controlled data-collection activities on designated development and test vehicles, including camera-kit installation, and safely staging and recording target driving scenarios.
- Follow test procedures and data-collection instructions to produce reliable video footage and associated test-case information for the Vision team.
- Identify recurring installation, hardware, or product issues and share field feedback with engineering, product, and support teams.
- Act as the eyes and ears of the Video development team on site, representing Geotab professionally.
- Support Video development with hands-on field and hardware work, such as prototype and accessory testing, when not supporting a pilot.
- Route installation and service issues to Field Services with clear diagnostic evidence, and agree escalation contacts for each pilot.
- Follow all applicable health, safety, privacy, security, and customer-site requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What you'll bring to the role:
- Equivalent combination of education and/or work experience in related field may be substituted. Recent graduates with strong technical fundamentals are encouraged to apply.
- Post-secondary certificate, diploma, or degree in Automotive Technology, Electrical or Electronics Technology, Mechatronics, Engineering Technology, Computer Systems, or a related field is preferred.
- Willingness and ability to travel approximately 70% of the time, including internationally (United States and Canada).
- Basic knowledge of vehicle electrical systems, wiring, power connections, or automotive electronics.
- Ability to use hand tools, diagnostic equipment, test equipment, and installation materials safely.
- Familiarity with MyGeotab or Jira is an asset.
- Ability to troubleshoot technical issues systematically and identify likely root causes.
- Familiarity with vehicle-mounted cameras, telematics devices, GPS equipment, networking, or connected-vehicle technology is an asset.
- Ability to read device logs and data to help diagnose issues.
- Ability to follow detailed installation, calibration, testing, and data-collection procedures.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to document technical work accurately.
- Clear verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to work independently in the field while collaborating effectively with customers and internal teams.
- Comfortable working in changing environments, including vehicle bays, parking lots, customer sites, and outdoor locations.
- Ability to safely handle customer and company equipment and maintain organized field kits.
- Commitment to workplace safety, data privacy, and professional customer interactions.
