The Software Engineer designs, develops, tests, and maintains software applications using modern programming languages and frameworks. Working in an Agile, globally distributed team, this role partners with product managers, designers, and other engineers to translate requirements into technical specifications and deliver clean, maintainable, and reliable code.

This individual works with minimal supervision on assigned features, actively learning and adopting the development methods, frameworks, and patterns defined for the role and by the team, and contributes to the design and implementation of enhancements to the team’s systems. The role is expected to use approved AI-assisted tools to accelerate delivery and improve quality while remaining fully accountable for every delivered result.

AI-Assisted Engineering Expectations

Evolent engineers are expected to effectively leverage approved AI-assisted development and productivity tools (e.g., code assistants, copilots, automation agents, knowledge assistants, and analytics tools) to improve quality, efficiency, and innovation while maintaining accountability for all delivered work. These expectations span the full engineering lifecycle, not only code generation, including iterating with AI on solution design, evaluating alternatives, and producing design artifacts. Engineers remain responsible for validating outputs, ensuring solution quality, protecting sensitive information, and complying with security, privacy, regulatory, and Responsible AI standards.

Key Responsibilities

Design and Development

• Design, develop, test, and maintain software applications for assigned features using modern programming languages and frameworks.

• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and other engineers to understand requirements and translate them into technical specifications.

• Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code, following the team’s established best practices, patterns, and coding standards.

• Write unit, integration, and end-to-end tests to ensure code quality and reliability.

• Contribute to the design and implementation of enhancements to the team’s systems.

Quality and Continuous Improvement

• Participate in code reviews to ensure code quality, functionality, and maintainability, and seek feedback to continuously improve skills.

• Troubleshoot, debug, and resolve technical issues and bugs in a timely manner.

• Optimize applications for performance, scalability, and reliability.

• Follow and help reinforce the team’s development processes and standards, helping peers understand the benefits and risks of exceptions.

• Contribute to the continuous improvement of development processes, tools, and methodologies, and stay current with emerging technologies and industry trends.

AI-Enabled Delivery

• Utilize approved AI-assisted engineering tools to accelerate software development, testing, documentation, troubleshooting, and analysis activities.

• Apply AI-assisted development techniques throughout the software development lifecycle, including requirements analysis, coding, testing, debugging, and documentation.

• Evaluate and validate AI-generated outputs for correctness, security, maintainability, compliance, and business appropriateness before use.

• Learn and adopt the prompts, skills, agents, and AI-assisted development patterns defined by the team, and share improvements that benefit the team.

• Identify opportunities to improve engineering productivity and quality through AI-enabled workflows and automation.

Governance and Compliance

• Follow enterprise policies governing AI usage, intellectual property protection, security, privacy, PHI handling, and Responsible AI practices.

• Ensure no confidential, regulated, or protected information is used with unapproved AI services or tooling.

• Participate in peer reviews and validation processes for AI-assisted solutions.

Required Qualifications

• 2+ years of professional software development experience using languages such as C#, Java, Python, or JavaScript.

• 2+ years of hands-on experience with Microsoft and .NET technologies, specifically .NET Core, C#, and T-SQL.

• Experience building RESTful APIs using ASP.NET.

• Working knowledge of relational database development, preferably using SQL Server.

• Familiarity with testing frameworks (e.g., xUnit, NUnit, MSTest), logging frameworks (e.g., NLog, log4net, Serilog), and ORM frameworks (e.g., Dapper, Entity Framework, NHibernate).

• Strong understanding of software design principles, algorithms, and data structures.

• Familiarity with Git-based version control (e.g., GitHub, Azure Git) and collaborative coding workflows, including pull requests.

• Familiarity with cloud platforms (e.g., Azure, AWS, Google Cloud) and containerization tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes).

• Excellent problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a globally distributed team.

• Strong communication skills, openness to feedback, and the ability to articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

• Exposure to AI-assisted development platforms such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Claude Code, or similar tools.

• Familiarity with prompt engineering, AI-assisted testing, and AI-enabled software delivery practices.

• Experience with front-end frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Vue), including developing Single Page Applications (SPA).

• Experience with additional back-end technologies (e.g., Node.js, Django, Spring).

• Familiarity with microservices architecture.

• Experience working with NoSQL data stores (e.g., Elasticsearch).

• Healthcare domain experience.

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.

Technical Requirements:

We require that all employees have the following technical capability at their home: High speed internet over 10 Mbps and, specifically for all call center employees, the ability to plug in directly to the home internet router.

The expected base salary/wage range for this position is $112,000-123,000. As part of our total compensation package, Evolent is proud to offer comprehensive benefits (including health insurance benefits) to qualifying employees. All compensation determinations are based on the skills and experience required for the position and commensurate with experience of selected individuals, which may vary above and below the stated amounts.
