Communications Specialist – Web Content, Social Media, Scientific Translation & Nationwide Communications Support
About the Role
We're seeking a digital communications professional to support website management, social media, scientific translation, and nationwide coordination across the OAR communications network. You'll transform scientific information into clear public-facing content and manage daily web, social, and editorial workflows.
What You'll Do
• Write and edit web/news stories, social posts, and digital content
• Translate complex scientific information into plain language
• Manage and update OAR WordPress pages and the internal Google Site
• Maintain content calendars and track nationwide communications needs
• Manage OAR Research Instagram, Facebook, and X channels
• Monitor engagement and coordinate with NOAA social-media teams
• Prepare analytics reports using Looker Studio
• Provide training, guidance, and SOPs to nationwide communicators
• Support campaigns, research recaps, and special initiatives
What You'll Bring
• Experience in communications, digital content, science communication, journalism, or public affairs
• Strong writing, editing, proofreading, and scientific translation abilities
• Experience with WordPress and social-media platforms
• Ability to coordinate multiple projects, deadlines, and review cycles
• Strong communication, research, and organizational skills
Preferred
• Experience with Federal, scientific, research, or mission-driven organizations
• Background in science, environmental studies, journalism, or related fields
• Experience with Google Workspace, Looker Studio, Canva, or similar tools
• Experience providing training or developing SOPs
