Role: Principal Software Engineer
Reports to: Manager, Product Development
Location: Houston, TX - Boston, MA Hybrid
About the role
As a Principal Software Engineer on Conga’s B2B Platform Engineering, Core Services team, you’ll own the security, identity, and access management capabilities that every Conga B2B product is built on. You’ll lead a team of 5 to 8 engineers, set technical direction for authentication and authorization across the platform, and serve as a key technical partner to the Advantage Platform organization. Together with Advantage, you’ll establish secure, reusable integration patterns between the two platforms.
This is a senior, hands-on role for an engineer who wants influence beyond a single product team. You’ll work in a highly connected environment, on a small team that supports a large customer base. That means ramping quickly, building trust across groups, and shaping shared security services used throughout Conga’s platform ecosystem.
What you’ll do
Own platform identity and security
- Act as the primary technical lead for platform-level security and identity services, including authentication and authorization systems.
- Lead design and development of mission-critical core services that support cross-product identity, access control, tenant context, and security standards.
- Translate high-level architectural direction into detailed technical designs and production-ready implementations.
- Ensure platform services meet strict security, availability, performance, and reliability requirements.
Build the B2B and Advantage integration
- Partner with the Advantage Platform team to define and implement secure integration patterns between B2B and Advantage.
- Define API contracts, authentication flows, authorization models, and tenant-context propagation across distributed systems.
- Coordinate cross-platform design, implementation, testing, release readiness, and operational support for shared authentication capabilities.
Lead and raise the bar
- Lead and mentor a team of 5 to 8 engineers, and provide technical guidance to engineering groups beyond your own.
- Provide technical leadership through code reviews, design reviews, threat modeling, and operational readiness.
- Raise the bar on secure coding practices and platform engineering discipline.
- Lead development in an Agile, CI/CD environment with a strong emphasis on automation, testability, and observability.
Partner across Conga
- Work with Architecture and Product Security to implement and evolve security patterns, standards, and controls across the platform.
- Collaborate across B2B Platform, Advantage Platform, Architecture, Product Engineering, AI, and Product Security to deliver secure, reusable integrations.
- Translate strategic AI pillar objectives into secure, scalable platform capabilities that can be reused across products and AI experiences.
- Document decisions, dependencies, ownership, and operational responsibilities clearly across team boundaries.
Support customers and production
- Lead incident investigation and resolution for security-sensitive services, including root cause analysis and long-term remediation.
- Engage directly with customers on support issues and escalations, and work through conflicting priorities with internal and external stakeholders.
Are you the person we’re looking for?
- 8+ years of backend software engineering, with a track record delivering enterprise SaaS services that operate at scale and are security-critical.
- 3+ years designing, building, or operating shared identity and platform-security services used by multiple products, including OAuth 2.0, OIDC, SAML, token-based authentication, role and permission models, and policy-driven access control.
- 3+ years as a technical leader or senior contributor on shared platform or infrastructure services.
- Deep experience building backend systems in a modern language such as Java, C#, Python, TypeScript, Scala, or Rust.
- Strong experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs used by multiple consumers.
- Solid experience with SQL and data stores supporting platform services.
- Strong understanding of software design patterns, distributed systems, and platform tradeoffs.
- Experience leading complex initiatives end to end: design, implementation, testing, deployment, and support.
- Experience leading technical initiatives that span multiple platforms, engineering organizations, and ownership boundaries.
- Experience leading and mentoring engineers, and influencing teams you don’t directly manage through collaboration and technical credibility.
- Experience translating strategic product or AI objectives into secure platform designs and executable delivery plans.
- Comfort in customer-facing work, including support, escalations, and resolving competing stakeholder perspectives.
- Strong communication skills and executive presence. You can work effectively with Architecture, Security, Product, engineering leaders, customers, and junior engineers.
Here’s what will give you an edge…
- Experience with Azure, AWS, or GCP, plus containerized and orchestrated environments (Docker, Kubernetes)
- Experience with Azure SQL
- Microservices experience and familiarity with cloud-native security patterns and service-to-service communication
- Exposure to DevOps and SRE practices for platform services, including monitoring, alerting, and automation
Why this role matters
You’ll be the technical leader for the identity and access capabilities that protect Conga’s entire B2B portfolio. Your work will secure the integration between the B2B and Advantage platforms, and it will define reusable authentication and authorization patterns for both product and AI experiences. You’ll also bring consistency to identity, tenant context, permissions, and service-to-service access across Conga.
The role comes with broad impact across multiple product teams, close alignment with Architecture and long-term platform strategy, and a clear growth path in technical leadership. You’ll help shape Conga’s security posture, engineering standards, and platform foundations.
