Solution Architect - SAP BDC

The SAP Solution Architect is accountable for defining, governing, and delivering end-to-end SAP solution architectures that align business strategy with technology capabilities. The role bridges business, functional, data, and technical domains to design scalable, secure, and future-ready solutions across SAP BDC and the wider enterprise landscape. The Solution Architect ensures architectural consistency, Clean Core compliance, integration integrity, and long-term sustainability across complex SAP environments.

As part of the Enterprise Insights Transformation and AI adoption journey, the role provides architecture leadership for the modernization of SAP BW through SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC). It defines how governed SAP data is exposed and integrated with Databricks, Microsoft Fabric, and Power BI to enable trusted data products, enterprise analytics, and AI use cases while preserving SAP semantics and avoiding unnecessary duplication.

YOUR KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Lead business and technical discovery activities and translate business requirements into end-to-end solution architectures, including integration with SAP and non-SAP systems.
• Define and maintain the detailed architecture of assigned SAP BW, SAP Datasphere and SAP Business Data Cloud solutions within approved enterprise and platform architecture.
• Define detailed logical, implementation and physical views for the assigned solution, including C4 level 3/4 views where relevant.
• Produce detailed interface designs and solution-level data flows using approved integration patterns and interface-catalog entries.
• Lead architecture workshops, design sessions and solution reviews with business and technology stakeholders.
• Collaborate with Enterprise Architects, Platform Architects and engineering teams to ensure SAP BW, SAP Datasphere and SAP Business Data Cloud solution designs align with enterprise architecture standards, platform capabilities and strategic technology direction.
• Own detailed solution data and model design for the assigned product/solution, applying approved domain, platform and semantic standards.
• Design solution architectures leveraging approved data products, semantic models and governance frameworks.
• Develop and maintain solution blueprints and detailed solution designs aligned with established architecture standards.
• Apply established standards and best practices for data products, semantic modelling and governed data consumption.
• Evaluate detailed solution options and provide configuration/development recommendations, component dependencies, estimates and roadmap input to the Platform Architect.
• Define detailed migration design and implementation specifications within the approved migration strategy and plan.
• Utilize approved hybrid and federated architecture patterns when designing solutions.
• Advise project teams on the appropriate use of SAP Business Data Cloud capabilities within solution architectures.
• Ensure solution designs comply with approved semantic modelling and cross-platform data consumption standards.
• Provide architectural leadership, guidance and mentoring to SAP BW consultants, engineers, data engineers and technical leads.
• Review detailed solution designs, document SA decisions, and submit required items through the approved architecture governance process.
• Identify solution-level risks and technical debt, document recommended actions, and provide input to the Platform Architect risk mitigation plan.
• Evaluate solution alternatives and recommend appropriate technologies within approved enterprise standards and platform capabilities.
• Ensure solution compliance with architecture governance processes, principles and standards.
• Communicate architecture decisions, trade-offs and strategic recommendations to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
• Support proof-of-concept initiatives and architecture assessments to validate solution approaches and technical feasibility.
• Stay up to date with developments in SAP BW, SAP Datasphere, SAP Business Data Cloud, cloud data platforms and industry best practices.
• Provide input into business process diagrams and activities for the assigned solution.
• Produce and maintain detailed solution architecture, including NFRs and C4 level 3/4 views where relevant.
• Own the functional specification and detailed interface design for the assigned solution.
• Define operational, monitoring and observability views, including operational NFRs.
• Define identity and access and security views for the assigned solution, aligned with enterprise and platform guardrails.
• Produce the technical specification and document detailed configuration/development options.
• Document component-level dependencies and ensure traceability into delivery.
• Define sprint enabler user stories and ensure NFRs are captured in user stories and acceptance criteria.
• Create and maintain Solution Architect decision records for solution-level decisions and trade-offs.
• Operate primarily at one-product scope across logical, implementation and physical detail, while aligning upward to Platform and Enterprise Architecture.

ARE THESE YOUR SECRET INGREDIENTS?

• 8+ years of experience in SAP BW consulting, engineering or solution architecture roles.
• 3+ years of experience in a Solution Architect role.
• Proven experience designing enterprise-scale SAP data warehousing, analytics and reporting solutions.
• Experience leading SAP BW modernization and cloud data platform transformation initiatives.
• Experience leading architecture workshops, solution reviews and architecture governance activities.
• Experience applying approved architectural standards, design principles and patterns, and providing evidence-based feedback for their improvement.
• Deep expertise in SAP BW and enterprise data warehousing concepts.
• Strong knowledge of SAP BI/BW/HANA and integration with SAP applications such as SAP ECC, SAP CRM and SAP S/4HANA.
• Experience with SAP Datasphere, including modelling concepts, semantic layers, data products and integration patterns.
• Experience with SAP Business Data Cloud architecture, concepts and services.
• Strong understanding of SAP BW, SAP Datasphere and SAP Business Data Cloud coexistence and migration scenarios.
• Strong knowledge of data architecture, data modelling, business intelligence concepts and analytical solution design methodologies.
• Understanding of business data products, semantic models and data fabric concepts.
• Experience designing hybrid architectures spanning SAP BW, SAP Datasphere, SAP Business Data Cloud and hyperscaler cloud platforms.
• Experience defining integration architectures across SAP and non-SAP landscapes.
• Understanding of federated data access, virtualization and cross-platform data consumption patterns.
• Experience with Azure Data Platform services and cloud-native analytics architectures is a plus.
• Familiarity with SAP's strategic data and analytics roadmap, including SAP Datasphere and SAP Business Data Cloud.
• Strong stakeholder management, communication and presentation skills.
• Ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Ability to communicate detailed solution trade-offs and influence solution-level decisions within approved enterprise and platform direction.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively across multiple teams and stakeholders.
• Strong consulting, facilitation and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to build consensus across business, engineering, platform and architecture teams.
• University degree in a relevant area or equivalent work experience.
• SAP BW certification is a plus.
• SAP Datasphere or SAP Data & Analytics certifications are a plus.
• TOGAF certification is a plus.
• SAFe methodology knowledge is a plus.
