The Cyber Security Manager is CAUK's hands-on lead of day-to-day cyber security. The role works directly in our security tools, such as Microsoft Defender, to find and investigate issues rather than waiting for our managed service provider (MSP) to raise them. It holds the MSP and suppliers to account, and helps colleagues across the organisation stay safe online. It works closely with the Head of Data and Technology, the Technology Operations Manager, Risk, Compliance and Data to find control gaps, review evidence, track fixes and turn cyber risks into practical actions.
Privileged administration and technical execution sit with the MSP and relevant suppliers. The role has full read access to the technology environment and may be given elevated access in specific areas where agreed, but does not hold global administrator rights. The Cyber Security Manager is accountable for internal ownership, challenge, follow-up and evidence of control effectiveness, using reporting, assurance evidence, risk assessment, supplier engagement and remediation tracking to validate that cyber risks are understood and addressed. The Technology Operations Manager owns the MSP relationship and day-to-day technology operations; this role feeds security challenge and requirements into those service reviews.
The role supports cyber resilience across the organisation by overseeing areas such as the annual Cyber Essentials Plus renewal, vulnerability management, penetration testing follow-up, cyber insurance evidence, email security, phishing awareness, incident response planning, identity and endpoint security assurance, and cyber-related supplier actions.
The role will also support the Head of Data and Technology in moving CAUK towards stronger formal security assurance, such as ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2, and in improving our NIST maturity score. The role is designed to grow with CAUK: as our cyber maturity increases, so will its scope and responsibility.
The role also acts as a business partner within the IT function, working with Risk, Compliance, Projects, Change, Data and wider business teams to make cyber security practical, proportionate and enabling. It helps unblock cyber-related delivery issues, clarify control requirements, coordinate MSP and supplier action, and ensure cyber security is embedded into operational technology activity without becoming a blocker to business outcomes.
We are looking for a self-starter who lives and breathes cyber security and knows what good looks like from hands-on experience. They will spot problems for themselves, keep up to date with current threats and be confident challenging the MSP and suppliers. They will also be articulate and engaging enough to help colleagues at all levels understand cyber risks and change their behaviour.
- Provide internal oversight, challenge and assurance of cyber security controls across Microsoft 365, Azure, identity, endpoint, email, supplier-supported services and operational technology processes. This includes the joint security review with Risk of non-standard SaaS and AI tool requests under the AI and ML Policy.
- Be the day-to-day challenger of the MSP and relevant suppliers on cyber security: ask for evidence that controls work, push back on incomplete or poor-quality fixes, chase actions to completion and escalate when they are not done. This covers control effectiveness, incident response, vulnerability management, patching evidence and service follow-through, and includes establishing what is actually monitored across Microsoft Defender and the SOC.
- Monitor Microsoft Defender and our other security tools directly: review alerts, Secure Score, vulnerability findings and device compliance, investigate suspicious activity, and make sure the MSP acts on what is found.
- Own cyber risk and remediation tracking, ensuring findings from vulnerability scans, penetration tests, insurer assessments, the Cyber Essentials Plus renewal, the cyber audit and supplier reviews are logged, prioritised, followed up and evidenced.
- Lead the annual Cyber Essentials Plus renewal, including bringing the separate Azure tenant used for banking hub devices into scope, by coordinating evidence, tracking remediation activity, challenging gaps and ensuring MSP and supplier actions are completed before assessment.
- Support the Head of Data and Technology in developing a longer-term cyber assurance roadmap, including ISO 27001 and SOC 2 Type 2 readiness, by identifying control gaps, gathering evidence and helping assess future needs such as SIEM, XDR, logging, monitoring and incident response.
- Oversee email security improvement activity, including DMARC, SPF, DKIM, phishing risk, business email compromise risk and related supplier remediation actions.
- Support cyber insurance and bank assurance requirements by coordinating evidence packs, insurer portal findings, security questionnaires, DDQs, rescans and remediation updates.
- Support incident response planning and cyber resilience by working with the MSP, Technology Operations Manager and Head of Data and Technology on escalation routes, playbooks, evidence, lessons learned and recovery actions. This includes testing the Cyber Incident Response Plan and evidencing Barracuda backup restore tests.
- Run CAUK's cyber security awareness programme using KnowBe4: plan and send phishing simulations, assign training, report results and follow up. Deliver engaging training sessions, including targeted sessions for colleagues who repeatedly fall for simulated phishing, so that risky behaviour improves over time.
- Support data governance and privacy-related cyber controls by working with Risk, Compliance, Data and suppliers on access controls, data protection risks, tracking technologies, privacy findings and remediation activity. This includes the sensitivity labelling and data loss prevention work led by the Data Governance Consultant.
- Maintain clear reporting on cyber risks, control gaps, remediation actions, supplier performance, insurer findings, awareness metrics and incident themes for the Head of Data and Technology and relevant governance forums.
Reduce key-person dependency on the Head of Data and Technology by taking ownership of day-to-day cyber security oversight, supplier coordination, evidence management and cyber-related business partnering.
