Senior Full Stack Software Engineer

Title: Full Stack Software Engineer Location: US - Remote

Who are we and why should you join us?

BetterHelp is on a mission to champion the well-being in all of us. We’re working to make mental healthcare more accessible, so more people can get the support they need, when they need it. As the world’s largest online therapy service, we’ve connected millions of people with a network of more than 30,000 licensed therapists-- and we’re not stopping there. As the unmet need for mental health services continues to grow, BetterHelp is committed to being part of the solution.

As a Full Stack Software Engineer at BetterHelp, you’ll join a diverse team of clinicians, engineers, product pros, creatives, marketers, and business leaders who share a passion for expanding access to therapy. You’ll have the opportunity to make an immediate impact, grow alongside the business, and do meaningful work alongside people who care deeply about what we’re building together.

What are we looking for?

We're looking for a talented software engineer who enjoys solving complex problems, learning continuously, and building products that make a meaningful difference. This role is ideal for someone who has delivered multiple challenging projects, takes pride in writing thoughtful, maintainable code, and enjoys both mentoring and learning from teammates.

You'll join an engineering culture that values ownership, curiosity, collaboration, and sound technical judgment. We embrace modern engineering practices and thoughtfully adopt new technologies, including AI, to help engineers focus on solving hard problems while keeping human expertise at the center of every decision.

What technologies will you work with?

We use a mix of established and modern technologies to support a platform serving millions of users. As our products evolve, we're continually improving our architecture, modernizing portions of our codebase, and evaluating technologies that help us build secure, reliable, and scalable software.

• Backend: Linux, nginx, Laravel (PHP), MySQL, Redis
• Frontend: React, Next.js, JavaScript, HTML5, CSS/SASS
• Existing technologies you may encounter as we modernize the platform: Twig, Bootstrap, jQuery

We do not expect candidates to have worked with every technology in our environment. We value strong software engineering fundamentals, curiosity, and the ability to learn unfamiliar systems.

What will you do?

• You will develop end to end, owning features from technical design and development through deployment, monitoring, and continued improvement.
• You will write clean, secure, readable, maintainable, and scalable code.
• You will collaborate closely with engineers, product managers, designers, and other cross-functional partners.
• You will design, integrate, and build internal and external APIs.
• You will develop new products and features while improving and modernizing existing systems.
• You will write and optimize SQL queries and design relational database schemas.
• You will create and maintain complex backend services and algorithms.
• You will profile, troubleshoot, and optimize new and legacy code.
• You will build experiences that work across mobile, tablet, and desktop environments.
• You will contribute to code reviews, technical discussions, and engineering practices that improve quality, reliability, security, and developer experience.
• You will ship thoughtfully and frequently in an agile environment with continuous deployment.
• You will care about our product, mission, and long-term success, well beyond checking off development tasks.
• You will thoughtfully use approved AI-assisted development tools to reduce repetitive work, explore solutions, and improve productivity while applying your own engineering judgment to architecture, implementation, security, privacy, and code quality. Engineers remain accountable for every technical decision.

What will you NOT do?

• You will NOT worry about funding. We have startup energy, with the support and resources of our parent company, Teladoc Health.
• You will NOT be limited to a narrow set of responsibilities. We encourage employees to contribute ideas, develop new skills, collaborate across teams, and explore opportunities that support both their growth and the growing needs of the business.
• You will NOT be expected to navigate a culture driven by ego or unnecessary hierarchy. We value respectful collaboration, thoughtful debate, and teammates who are committed to shared success.
• You will NOT be expected to sacrifice your well-being to make an impact. We work hard and hold ourselves to high standards, all while supporting sustainable ways of working.
• You will NOT have to wonder why your work matters. The work we do here helps to expand access to mental health care and supports people seeking help when they need it.

Can I work remotely?

Yes. This role can be performed remotely from anywhere in the U.S. While we embrace the flexibility of remote work, we also value opportunities to bring teams together in person for collaboration and connection. BetterHelp covers approved expenses for company-requested travel, and reasonable accommodations are available for employees who are unable to travel.
