What You'll Do

Avalara's website platform is only as valuable as the authors who use it every day to publish content. Today, author success depends heavily on expertise with the CMS and web marketing practices, which slows content velocity and creates inconsistent, off-brand, or low-ROI use of the platform.

This role exists to change that: to own the template and component library as a product, define its scope and guardrails, and make the authoring experience simple enough that any content contributor can succeed without platform

The business outcome is faster, more consistent, and more measurable content production, with design and functionality decisions anchored to brand integrity and return on investment rather than ad hoc requests.

What Your Responsibilities Will Be

  • Own and govern the CMS template and component library, defining the scope, limits, and supported features of each component so authors have a clear, sustainable toolkit to work within.

  • Set the boundaries of design and feature influence on the platform, ensuring new functionality is added only where it reinforces brand consistency and demonstrates a clear return on investment.

  • Define what behavioral data must be captured across templates and components to drive understanding of common visitor behavior.

  • Act as the primary source of truth on platform capabilities and constraints for internal stakeholders, tailoring explanations for both content-management-fluent and non-technical audiences.

  • Support teams working on internationalization and localization projects. Guide teams through the workflows that enable content publishing across multiple geographies.

  • Continuously improve the usability of the template and component library, lowering the learning curve so authors can succeed with less reliance on specialized CMS or web marketing skills.

  • Demonstrate platform functionality and design potential to stakeholders exploring new ways to promote their products, translating technical capability into business opportunity.

  • Identify shortcomings in the platform and translate them into clear, prioritized requirements for the CMS development teams.

  • Identify gaps in content analysis and reporting tools and define requirements to close them so stakeholders can trust the data behind their content decisions.

  • Define the constraints and guardrails within the authoring environment needed to protect SEO, tagging, and asset management integrity, without unnecessarily limiting author flexibility.

  • Define the strategy for asset management and oversee the implementation of standards and practices for asset upload, metadata assignment, and retrieval.

  • Use AI to accelerate and improve this work end-to-end, with particular emphasis on helping authors and content creators succeed without needing deep CMS or web marketing expertise.

What You’ll Need To Be Successful

What You'll Need to be Successful

  • Drive measurable improvements in content and campaign creation outcomes for engagement and conversion, increasing stakeholder confidence in the platform across both technical and non-technical teams.
  • A governed component library and change process is in place, with a measurable reduction in one-off, duplicate, or unsupported components.

  • Authors show a measurable improvement in time-to-publish and a measurable reduction in platform-related support requests, driven by usability improvements to templates and components.

  • Analytics and behavioral data capture is defined and implemented across most templates and components, enabling stakeholders to self-serve engagement reporting.

  • Asset management standards (upload, metadata, retrieval) are defined, adopted, and show measurable improvement in asset findability and metadata completeness.

AI Expectations

In this role you will

  • Use AI to accelerate the definition, documentation, and governance of the template and component library, including surfacing unused or redundant components.

  • Deploy at least one AI-enabled authoring aid live into production, with a quantifiable reduction in the AEM expertise required for authors to publish successfully.

  • Apply AI to analyze content and analytics data, identifying gaps in reporting and opportunities to improve measurement of user behavior.

  • Build or direct AI-enabled aids (for example, in-authoring guidance, automated metadata or tagging suggestions, or content quality checks) that let authors succeed without deep CMS or web marketing skills.

  • Quantify the impact of AI adoption in this role, such as reduced authoring errors, faster onboarding of new authors, or hours saved on manual review.

  • Apply AI responsibly and securely, with attention to data governance given the customer-facing nature of the content platform.

  • Share AI practices and tooling with peers to raise AI capability across the broader platform and content management function.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in an Information Technology field required, consistent with Avalara's degree requirement for technical program management roles.
  • 7+ years of experience in technical program or product management for a web content management or digital experience platform, including direct ownership of a template or component library at a senior level.

  • Direct experience with one more enterprise content management systems or digital experience platforms including author-facing template and component design.

  • Experience defining requirements and guardrails for SEO, tagging, and asset management (DAM) within a content authoring environment.

  • Demonstrated, quantifiable use of AI tools to improve platform governance, content operations, or author enablement, consistent with Avalara's AI Bar Raiser standard.

  • A track record of raising the performance of teams and processes around them, consistent with Avalara's Bar Raiser expectations for judgment, ownership, and accountability.

This role is a Bar Raiser hire. The successful candidate will:
  • Hold themselves and others to high standards of technical quality, data integrity, and operational accountability.
  • Demonstrate strong judgment when making platform and technical tradeoffs, especially those that affect campaign performance, lead data quality, or system reliability.
  • Raise the performance of those around them through mentorship, rigorous technical guidance, and clear documentation.
  • Simplify complexity, translating ambiguous marketing requirements into clean, maintainable technical solutions.
  • Challenge assumptions respectfully and bring data into technical decisions.
  • Leave every system, process, and team they touch stronger than they found it.
