Junior Knowledge Management Specialist
The Knowledge Management Specialist (internal Technical Writer labor category) researches and compiles technical data for use in documents such as manuals, articles, job aids, templates, procedures, and specifications. This role analyzes project requirements to determine the types of publications needed, obtaining data through independent observation, consultation with technical staff, and review of published materials and drawings. The Specialist ensures the accuracy and completeness of technical documentation, participates in general layout and manual organization, and ensures adherence to specifications such as DoDAF and IEEE and to professional writing standards such as AMA, APA, and CSE styles. This role may be mentored by senior Technical Writers.
Key Responsibilities
- Works with internal teams and Subject Matter Experts to obtain an in-depth understanding of the content, product, and documentation requirements.
- Analyzes existing and potential content, focusing on reuse and single-sourcing opportunities.
- Studies drawings, official announcements, specifications, mockups, test sites, and product samples, and meets with product designers and developers.
- Uses graphics (photographs, drawings, diagrams, etc.) that increase end users' understanding of the Customer/program system.
- Translates development requirements into required documentation changes; adheres to CMMI Level 3/AIMM platform requirements.
- Proofs documentation to detect and correct errors in spelling, grammar, syntax, and established styles and standards.
- Analyzes requirements of the project to determine scope of work and required documentation products.
- Understands and applies overarching policy requirements to ensure all documentation products comply with those requirements.
- Determines the needs of end users of technical documentation and ensures that documentation meets those needs.
- Produces technical documentation that is clear, concise, and comprehensible.
- Gathers usability feedback from customers, designers, and manufacturers.
Required Qualifications
- Associate's degree in English, Communications, Technical Writing, or a related field, or equivalent relevant experience.
- 1-2 years of experience in technical writing, documentation, or knowledge management
- Excellent command of English grammar, style, and editing.
- Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Visio, PowerPoint) and Adobe Acrobat Professional.
- Experience with desktop publishing tools from Adobe and Microsoft.
- Ability to translate technical and functional requirements into clear, audience-appropriate documentation.
- Ability to work effectively in a fully remote, distributed team environment.
- Candidates must be US citizens and will be required to undergo a federal background investigation in order to gain access to sensitive information.
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in English, Communications, Information Science, or a related field.
- Experience with knowledge management practices, taxonomies, and content governance in a federal environment.
- Experience adhering to DoDAF, IEEE, and professional writing standards such as AMA, APA, and CSE styles.
- Industry-recognized technical writing or knowledge management certification.
- Experience with CMMI Level 3 / AIMM-aligned documentation practices.

Compensation Ranges
Compensation ranges for ASM Research positions vary depending on multiple factors; including but not limited to, location, skill set, level of education, certifications, client requirements, contract-specific affordability, government clearance and investigation level, and years of experience. The compensation displayed for this role is a general guideline based on these factors and is unique to each role. Monetary compensation is one component of ASM's overall compensation and benefits package for employees.
