The Motion Sensing Hardware System team is looking for an individual who will be focused on adopting and building platforms and tools that enhance the engineering design processes behind millions of Apple products, including iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, AirPods, Vision Pro, and more. This is a unique opportunity to apply your AI/ML expertise and software development skills while working closely with sensing hardware engineering to bring real impact to the system integration process. We are seeking a seasoned AI Application Engineer with strong architectural thinking, deep AI/ML knowledge, and robust software development skills to help design, build, and deploy intelligent systems powered by machine learning and large language models (LLMs). As our team is looking to increase AI adoption in our workflows, you’ll be self-driven in identifying gaps, receptive to enterprise AI solutions available across Apple, and ready to architect custom solutions where they fall short. In this role, you'll work at the intersection of applied AI and software engineering, translating cutting-edge research into practical, scalable tools. You’ll take ideas from feasibility studies and rapid prototypes to production-ready solutions with intuitive, high-quality user experiences. Your contributions will shape how engineering teams make faster, smarter decisions across many Apple hardware programs.

• Serve as a founding engineer to shape the team's AI technical foundation and roadmap.
• Identify gaps and opportunities in hardware engineering workflows where AI can bring impact.
• Partner with hardware teams to define features and scope for AI solutions.
• Evaluate and adopt enterprise AI solutions from across Apple, and introduce custom workflows tailored to team needs.
• Benchmark, adapt, and integrate AI/ML models into existing software systems.
• Architect and implement end-to-end software solutions where existing platforms fall short.
• Deploy and support AI tools, including user interfaces, for our hardware engineering teams.

• BS and a minimum of 10 years relevant industry experience
• Strong understanding of generative AI models, particularly large language models (LLMs)
• Proficiency in Python
• Excellent software engineering skills, versed in modular and object-oriented design methodology and general SW best practices
• Proven ability to work with cross-functional teams and drive decision-making under uncertainty
• Self-driven, with strong problem-solving skills and a passion for tackling new challenges in ambiguous, early-stage environments

• 5+ years of software development experience, including 2+ years of hands-on experience developing AI-powered applications
• Experience designing and deploying agentic AI systems
• Experience adopting and integrating enterprise AI platforms across teams
• Background in sensing systems (e.g., IMUs, pressure sensors, magnetic sensors, signal processing, sensor fusion) or hardware system integration
• Experience with ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow, scikit-learn)
• Demonstrated ability to bring state-of-the-art AI research into production systems
• Hands-on experience with cloud services and containerization technologies
• Experience building user interfaces (web or native)
• Master's or PhD in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

At Apple, base pay is one part of our total compensation package and is determined within a range. This provides the opportunity to progress as you grow and develop within a role. The base pay range for this role is between $175,000 and $308,500, and your base pay will depend on your skills, qualifications, experience, and location. Apple employees also have the opportunity to become an Apple shareholder through participation in Apple’s discretionary employee stock programs. Apple employees are eligible for discretionary restricted stock unit awards, and can purchase Apple stock at a discount if voluntarily participating in Apple’s Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Additionally, this role might be eligible for discretionary bonuses or commission payments as well as relocation.
