Backend Engineer

In the <strong>Loyalty & Virality Tribe</strong>, we own the relationship. We are the architects of the HelloFresh Rewards and Loyalty ecosystem, where our goal is to create a "sticky" experience that delights our members and keeps them coming back.</p> <p>You’ll be contributing to a high-cadence team focused on one primary goal: <strong>Loyalty Member ROI</strong>. The team doesn't just build features; it builds reasons for millions of users to engage with their reward points, explore new products, and feel valued at every step of their journey—from the shopping funnel and beyond.</p> <p><strong>What you’ll do: The Recipe</strong></p> <ul> <li><strong>Drive Loyalty ROI:</strong> Design and ship features across the Loyalty and Rewards domain that encourage members to earn, track, and—most importantly—spend their points.</li> <li><strong>Backend Ownership:</strong> Design, develop, and deploy high-performance, scalable backend services and APIs in the Loyalty and Rewards domain. You will ensure end-to-end delivery by collaborating closely with frontend/mobile engineering teams.</li> <li><strong>High-Velocity Iteration:</strong> We move fast. You will help us maintain an aggressive development cadence, turning hypotheses into live experiments in day(s), not weeks.</li> <li><strong>Shape the Backlog:</strong> You are encouraged to contribute to our hypothesis backlog, helping decide what is built based on data coming from customer behavior.</li> </ul> <h2><strong>What you’ll bring: The Ingredients </strong></h2> <ul> <li><strong>Agentic Engineering</strong>: Meaningful experience using AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Cursor, Copilot) as part of your regular workflow. You use AI agents as thought partners to onboard on unfamiliar codebases and  navigate new areas of the code. You are developing a feel for how the way you frame tasks for AI tools affects the quality of results, and for where AI assistance needs closer supervision. You are curious about how and why AI tools fail and are building habits around verification.</li> <li><strong>Backend Engineering:</strong> A minimum of 3 years of hands-on experience in building and deploying scalable backend services. Proficiency in Go and/or PHP is preferred; experience with JVM languages (e.g., Java, Kotlin) and a willingness to learn Golang is also welcome. Familiarity with cloud technologies is a plus.</li> <li><strong>Microservices and Distributed Systems:</strong> Strong background in backend development, with a focus on microservices and distributed systems. Proven ability to build event-driven architectures using messaging technologies such as RabbitMQ, Kafka, or AWS SQS/SNS. A deep understanding of integrating backend services with various clients (web/mobile) seamlessly.</li> <li><strong>Database Expertise:</strong> Deep understanding of relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL). Familiarity with non-relational databases (e.g., document or key-value stores) and/or GraphQL is a plus.</li> <li><strong>System Integration Focus:</strong> You possess a strong understanding of the entire system landscape and are adept at ensuring seamless and resilient integration across services and domains.</li> <li><strong>Development Process Excellence:</strong> Practical knowledge of Docker, container orchestration tools like Kubernetes, and CI/CD implementation. Solid foundation in testing practices, including both unit and end-to-end testing.</li> <li><strong>Collaboration:</strong> Strong collaboration skills when partnering with product designers to deliver impactful user experiences.</li> <li><strong>The Speed Factor: </strong>You thrive in environments with aggressive prioritization, demonstrating an ability to make necessary trade-off decisions, including product-related ones.
