Summary/Objective

The Laser Technician is responsible for providing MLS Laser Therapy treatments to patients under physician order and according to established clinical protocols. This position supports OrthoSC's laser therapy program by ensuring a safe, efficient, and exceptional patient experience while maintaining compliance with all safety standards, documentation requirements, and company policies. The Laser Technician serves as a key resource for patient education, treatment delivery, scheduling coordination, and program growth.

Essential Functions

  1. Administers MLS Laser Therapy treatments according to physician orders, approved protocols, and manufacturer guidelines.
  2. Reviews patient contraindications, consent forms, and treatment plans prior to initiating therapy.
  3. Educates patients regarding laser therapy expectations, treatment plans, benefits, risks, and post-treatment instructions.
  4. Ensures proper patient positioning and treatment area preparation before each session.
  5. Selects and applies laser treatment parameters according to established protocols and physician orders.
  6. Provides and ensures proper use of required protective eyewear and safety equipment.
  7. Maintains strict adherence to laser safety standards, including room preparation, signage requirements, and equipment handling procedures.
  8. Completes accurate and timely clinical documentation in Athena utilizing approved laser therapy documentation templates.
  9. Routes encounter documentation to the referring provider for review and signature
  10. Coordinates with scheduling, financial counseling, and front office teams to ensure patients are appropriately scheduled and financial requirements are met.
  11. Cleans, sanitizes, and maintains laser equipment and treatment rooms according to infection control standards and manufacturer recommendations.
  12. Assists with inventory management and ordering of supplies necessary to support laser therapy services.
  13. Participates in staff meetings, training initiatives, and program development activities.
  14. Assists with patient outreach, marketing events, educational opportunities, and initiatives designed to increase awareness and utilization of the laser therapy program.
  15. Monitors patient satisfaction and promptly escalates concerns to leadership when appropriate.
  16. Maintains compliance with HIPAA, OSHA, manufacturer requirements, company policies, and applicable regulations.
  17. Maintains required certifications and competencies related to laser therapy.
  18. Other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

This position operates in a professional outpatient clinical environment. The role routinely utilizes laser therapy equipment, computers, telephones, and other standard office and clinical equipment. Proper laser safety precautions and personal protective equipment are required during treatment administration.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

  • Stand and walk for extended periods
  • Assist patients with positioning and transfers as necessary
  • Bend, reach, kneel, push, pull, and lift up to 30 pounds
  • Use hands and fingers to operate treatment equipment and computer systems
  • Maintain visual acuity sufficient to safely administer treatments and document care

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work will vary based on clinic operations, provider schedules, and patient demand.

Travel

Travel between OrthoSC locations may be required.

Education and Experience

Required

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum one (1) year of healthcare experience
  • Experience working directly with patients in a clinical setting
  • Basic computer proficiency
  • Successful completion of OrthoSC-approved MLS Laser Therapy training program- offered in-house

Preferred

  • Certified Medical Assistant, Athletic Trainer, Exercise Science graduate, or related healthcare background
  • Previous experience with therapeutic modalities, rehabilitation, or orthopedic patient care
  • Experience with Athena or similar electronic medical record systems
